Condoms depicted on TV and Film

Mouse_Spouse is a CSI fan. Every now and again, I watch the shows with him.

Maybe I’m a pervert, but whenever they find a condom, it doesn’t look right to me. In my (limited) experience, a used condom looks small and shriveled. On these shows, they look like large latex socks.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Just out of curiosity, are there any movies - excluding porn - where you see prophylactics?

::blushing:: Thanks!

Alien Nation showed one. It looked normal (and unused) to me, and had one of my favorite lines associated with it. James Caan is trying to explain what a condom, found on a murder victim, was for.

James Caan’s character: “Do you need this?”
Female evidence room clerk: “No thanks, I have my own.”

I have no response to part one of your question, but for part two – I remember several years ago an episode of General Hospital, in which Jason and Carly were getting ready to have sex. The actor playing Jason was clearly shown ripping the condom package open with his teeth. We didn’t see the actual condom, though.

The 40-Year Old Virgin has a humorous condom setpiece.

The Blues Brothers opens with a condom gag.

But no film has ever, nor will ever, match the infamous glow-in-the-dark condom scene in Skin Deep.

:sniff: Some of us just can’t help it–we were born that way! :stuck_out_tongue:

The Blake Edward’s movie Skin Deep (starred John Ritter), which was otherwise forgettable, had a *very * funny condom scene. If you’ve seen it, you know which scene I mean.

Trainspotting (Renton & Diane)

Really? Its been years since I’ve seen this movie - time to see again. (My cats are named after the Blues Brothers. Maybe that was a bad idea.)

I also remember seeing something once that might just have been a short; somebody launches a diaphragm and the dog leaps across the room and catches it like a frisbee. In slow motion.

Okay, it’s gonna be hard to get back to work with that clip running in my head…

It’s the scene with Frank Oz in the prison, and it’s always edited out for television.

Great. For the rest of the day, I’ll be thinking, “No Fozzy! Stop that!”

::shivers::

One reason I can think of for showing large sock-looking condoms is so it’s easily seen and identifiable by a viewer. A small shrivelled flap of latex on camera doesn’t cut it.

Ok, caffeine has kicked in.

I’m paraphrasing here.

Frank Oz: One condom, sealed. One pause, used pen it picked it up soiled.

My favorite line (paraphrased, after James Cann explains to the alien what it’s used for):

Alien: It fits??
Caan: Well, it stretches a lot.
Alien: Still, it fits?

Heh.

To the OP: I’ve noticed the same thing, and I think it does have something to do with how it shows up on camera. It’s just harder to see a little shriveled used condom than an unused one.

I always think that some of the ones the CSI’s and such find should be a bit more dried out and crusty, though.

Oh, it’s actually much funnier, because he says “prophylactic”.

Depends on how old the crime scene is.

Okay, that’s just creepy. Mine too.

They’re brothers, they’re Russian Blues, it seemed obvious to me…

Reminds me of a Family Guy bit.

Peter: "Now meg, if you’re going to sleep with a guy, don’t forget one of these ::Holds up black trash bag::
Meg: Dad, thats a garbage bag, don’t you mean a Condom?
peter: ::Shakes garbage bag:: Heafty Heafty Heafty!! :Camera zooms in on Condom as peter shakes it:: Whimpy whimpy whimpy!!

Apparently nobody in this thread has heard of Magnums.

Perhaps we have, but are to modest to mention it.
