Confused and chastened by Tubadiva

 You’re bitter!

…but that was obvious when you said
**

But it’s still bad form.

You want to start a “Scylla Sux” thread? Go for it. I might have argued against you as I did here (I notice you didn’t respond to my point that several of Scylla’s other posts, far more graphic, made Threadspotting…I wonder why you chose to not respond? Could it because you have tapioca for brains?) but I wouldn’t have argued your right to dig up an ancient grudge that still apparently makes you weep at night or said “bad form”. As a matter of fact, I encourage you to do so if the wounds from that ancient drubbing you took are still aching. The outcome would be amusing to watch.

However, hijacking this thread to air an ooooollllddddd grievance is, in fact, bad form. It would be like if I had taken one of those threads where you admitted to trolling, or the one where you went after Polycarp, Andros and Gaudere where you got your ass handed to you by a number of Dopers (including me!Ah-HA! No wonder you’re so bitter)! and brought it up in a completely unrelated thread out of the blue.

Also, I find your “the hair on your n*ds” comment to be graphic, vulgar and obscene by YOUR definition. I demand an apology to myself, the Board and the Mods/Admins and to all God’s chilluns for that grotesque violation of your interpretation of the registration agreement.

I’ll expect the apology in the same post where you explain how Scylla’s posts could be showcased on the front page of the board and at the same time be in violation of the registration agreement.

Fenris

Who’s “we”? People who don’t go into the Pit at all? People who registered within the last three days? And what “message” is that? I still don’t know. This is not settled until the mods have finished their round-table discussion (I assume and hope they’re having one) and give us a much more clear picture of what they expect from us.

Rilchiam, I don’t disagree with you at all, to the contrary, but considering the 8 855 views that this thread had pulled when I just entered it just now and made it 8 856 I think we are slowly getting to the point where it is self enforcing…

The only problem, still: ¿enforcing what?

sparc: “Oh, right…duh…” to your first paragraph, “Yeah, man” to your second.

Here’s another case for the “Raising the Tone” file, this time by Lynn:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=128895

Although I imagine that thread would have been closed pretty quickly anyway, tone or no tone.

Are you kidding? Do you expect anyone to believe that? People said the same thing asking Jenny to respond. She did. They made jackels look tame.

Incredibly so.

Oh, for pity’s sake, Libertarian. Flaming is, “Jenny, you stupid @#&%, why the @&*#& did you !!$^# the ^##@&%ing #$$%??!”

Flaming is NOT, “Jenny, we disagree strongly with what you did, it has left us bewildered and confused. We believe you were in the wrong for this and this reason.”

If you’d like, I could flame you so you would have a sample by which to tell the difference.

At any rate, Jenny is an adult woman who is quite capable of defending herself against sincere, civil, but strong criticism from ¡¡¡peaceful honest people!!! without your distortions.

I’m going out of town, but I wanted to post here, so I’ll see if I can cover all the ground with just power-packed, factilitious soundbites.

-The thread in question was in no danger of evolving into Catcher in the Rye. Western literature will recover from the blow. Marginal decision, marginal thread. T’ain’t no big thing, Bronco.

-Tuba’s explanation made me feel better. I appreciate her posting her weaknesses and failings so that we could use them against her. Nice going, guys. Not everything has to be overt. Not everything has to be microexamined. The explanation as written is more than was required. She could have just been arbitrary, but she opened up and told us the truth.

-Grienspace, you did not get sympathy in that other thread because you were wrong and acting like an idiot. You’re still acting like an idiot. Stop acting like an idiot, and you will get people on your side. Try posting “Y’know? I was wrong. Sorry.”

-I’m still interested in a clarification and I hope that one is forthcoming. I assume they haven’t clarified because they haven’t decided how to clarify the policy yet. This is killing me because I’m literally bursting with great one-liners both risque and downright obscene that I daren’t use. It makes it tough to post.

-Certain posts and threads probably exist right now due to a kind of grace period while they figure this out. Pushing would be ill-advised. I wouldn’t read anything into it.

-If my thread was considered innapropriate or vulgar the first time around, it is probably a bad idea to cut and paste it here or further vulgarize it. I consider that to be in the the category of “incredibly obvious,” but perhaps not.

-Assuming they don’t want to close the board on us idiots or institute a boardwide pg rating, they really only have one good choice as to how to deal with this. I’m sure they’ll figure it out, but in case they don’t, I’ll post it here. I think the clarification should be, and will be something along these lines:

"If you are going to go there, it better be good.

While we do not expressly forbid topics and discussion of a vulgar or frank nature, we will insist upon and enforce a quality standard. , and close posts and threads that we beleive are simply gratuitous. Like Cecil’s columns of frank nature, and like previous posts and threads of frank nature of which we are proud, we will expect that if you are to post frankly and graphically that your posts will stand on their own merits. We regret this policy but feel that it is necesary in light of the onslaught of overly vulgar and graphic content without redeeming quality that is infiltrating the board.

Clearly this will be a subjective judgement, and some posts and threads that may have some quality content will suffer. The best defense will be some discretion on our members’ part. You should consider that you will be held to a higher quality standard if you choose to post graphic or vulgar content, and expect to have your thread or post locked or deleted if we deem it to be merely vulgar unnecessarily gratuitous.

Before you post things of this nature, ask yourself:

 1. Is this really good, funny, informative?
 2. Is the vulgarity and or graphic nature necessary?

If we feel subjectively that it is not, we will shut it down without recourse or explanation. Habitual offenders will be warned and risk losing their posting privileges. Thank you in advance."

Trey Parker and Matt Stone were upset when their film Orgazmo received an x-rating. They felt that their art was being compromised. They didn’t get a lot of support, because in the final analysis Orgazmo was just a bad movie. It didn’t stand on its own merits.

Very simply the rule should be “If you are going to go there, it better be good.”

Applauds

Nope, I am not joking at all. Naturally, I can’t extend any guaranties that other posters will not flame, but I can state that I will not.

Hell, my email address is not secret (check my profile). If the person or persons that allegedly complained and caused the thread closure wish, I will be glad to explore that more private venue.

My main point here is that I feel that some "“squeaky wheel” was able to cause something to happen that is not (as far as I can tell) in accordance with the dominant culture of the SDMB. I feel at least that we are owed some sort of a specific explanation here.

Fenris thank you for enlightenings us. You’re the MAN, can I BE you?

Who’s hijacking a thread??? from a thread about b]Scylla’s[/] exchange with an administrator you’re trying to make it about me. Go ahead start your oown pit thread :wally

Sorry if you interpreted it that way.

If you could read with any comprehension, the only post of** Scylla’s** that I referred to as violating the Registration Contract was the OP in the thread that was shut down. The SDMB aministration is in agreement with me on that dear Fenris. Are you telling me that the post in question is now in threadspotting ?

Sick? What kind of tone are we talking about here?

Mental Note. No threads about:
[li]Sperm[/li][li]'N Sync[/li][li]Opal?[/li]

Grieny, attend and follow:

You said

There does seem to be a reading comprehension problem going on. But it’s not me who has this problem.

 1. Scylla has made MANY posts.

 2. Some of those posts have been more graphic than the closed one by ANY rational standard. Goat Sex for one, Ewe Sluts for another.

 3. Some of those more graphic posts (though not the one in question) made Threadspotting under the same registration agreement that you keep referring to.

 4. Ergo, the SDMB Admin has changed it’s standards (certainly their perogative.)

 5. But, since you’re saying that it’s not a sudden change of standards, either you’re arguing that A) Goat Sex and Ewe Sluts WEREN’T more graphic (in which case, you’re an idiot) OR B) you’re arguing that the mods are capricious and arbitrary, which would would certainly fit your previous M.O.

And really, if you’re still so torn up inside about Scylla being mean to you, why didn’t you start a new thread about how Scylla made you cry instead of hiding your sniping in an unrelated thread. Remember back on page one when you said

this?

That comment was what was poor form. If you’d just said that you were mortally offended by Scylla’s post and you were the one who complained (were you?), I wouldn’t have said much of anything. Your “Scylla made me cry 'cause he’s mean and likes the mods” comment was what was pathetic.

And for your final point, a response to a allegation made in a hijack is not, in fact, a hijack. If it was, we’d have people like you feeling free to snipe all over the place without fear of reprisal.

Fenris

Well done, Scylla. This – not just this one line, but also the several paragraphs of clarification that came with it – is the most constructive thing I’ve read in this whole thread.

Ok, I admit that I just don’t get it. Perhaps I was whooshed here, but I am baffled by this thread closure.

As AudreyK was kind enough to translate http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=128895]that thread, perhaps a translation of what prompted it being closed is in order as well.

Honestly, I am starting to feel as if I have would up in the Bizzaro SDMB. Seriously, are they automating thread locking now with some buggy software? Have the Mod’s accounts been compromised by Dadaists? Just what is going on here?

Okay, I’m with you after reading that thread. It was at best just passably functionably literate, but what was “vulgar or obscene” about it? What was so close-worthy? Do we get to close all hideously written OPs now? (oh, goody! )

This is even more confusing than before. The worst thing the OP of that thread said was “You stole Matt’s job, and you don’t even do it well, asshole!”

Um…huh? I don’t get this.

I started a thread in ATMB to discover if, in fact, the moderators and administrators are still discussing this issue and plan to fill us in on the new policy. So far, no replies.

Fenris I can’t argue with someone who fails to address the point of my argument, but rather wishes to expand and elaborate hisd own agenda that has nothing to do with my original comment re Scylla expression of surprise and sorrow for being admonished by an administrator, or my quoting the registration contract and its relevance to the OP of this thread. One can not find one point of error in my comments in this thread although I will grant you the right to take on your uppity moralistic high-falutin tone with what is bad form. I still haven’t violated the Registration Contract.

grienpace and Fenris. I respectfully ask that you both go Here to continue your frank exchange of ideas. I feel that the swipes that you guys are taking at each other are distracting from a discussion of great importance.

I thank you

Hokay…Arnold replied to my ATMB thread, located here.

Official word: Yes, this issue is still being discussed. We will be notified once a consensus is reached.

[sub]I know many of us assumed so, but I just wanted to confirm it. Yah know. So those aren’t crickets we’re hearing–it’s the whirr of their collective intellects.[/sub]
