I’m going out of town, but I wanted to post here, so I’ll see if I can cover all the ground with just power-packed, factilitious soundbites.
-The thread in question was in no danger of evolving into Catcher in the Rye. Western literature will recover from the blow. Marginal decision, marginal thread. T’ain’t no big thing, Bronco.
-Tuba’s explanation made me feel better. I appreciate her posting her weaknesses and failings so that we could use them against her. Nice going, guys. Not everything has to be overt. Not everything has to be microexamined. The explanation as written is more than was required. She could have just been arbitrary, but she opened up and told us the truth.
-Grienspace, you did not get sympathy in that other thread because you were wrong and acting like an idiot. You’re still acting like an idiot. Stop acting like an idiot, and you will get people on your side. Try posting “Y’know? I was wrong. Sorry.”
-I’m still interested in a clarification and I hope that one is forthcoming. I assume they haven’t clarified because they haven’t decided how to clarify the policy yet. This is killing me because I’m literally bursting with great one-liners both risque and downright obscene that I daren’t use. It makes it tough to post.
-Certain posts and threads probably exist right now due to a kind of grace period while they figure this out. Pushing would be ill-advised. I wouldn’t read anything into it.
-If my thread was considered innapropriate or vulgar the first time around, it is probably a bad idea to cut and paste it here or further vulgarize it. I consider that to be in the the category of “incredibly obvious,” but perhaps not.
-Assuming they don’t want to close the board on us idiots or institute a boardwide pg rating, they really only have one good choice as to how to deal with this. I’m sure they’ll figure it out, but in case they don’t, I’ll post it here. I think the clarification should be, and will be something along these lines:
"If you are going to go there, it better be good.
While we do not expressly forbid topics and discussion of a vulgar or frank nature, we will insist upon and enforce a quality standard. , and close posts and threads that we beleive are simply gratuitous. Like Cecil’s columns of frank nature, and like previous posts and threads of frank nature of which we are proud, we will expect that if you are to post frankly and graphically that your posts will stand on their own merits. We regret this policy but feel that it is necesary in light of the onslaught of overly vulgar and graphic content without redeeming quality that is infiltrating the board.
Clearly this will be a subjective judgement, and some posts and threads that may have some quality content will suffer. The best defense will be some discretion on our members’ part. You should consider that you will be held to a higher quality standard if you choose to post graphic or vulgar content, and expect to have your thread or post locked or deleted if we deem it to be merely vulgar unnecessarily gratuitous.
Before you post things of this nature, ask yourself:
- Is this really good, funny, informative?
- Is the vulgarity and or graphic nature necessary?
If we feel subjectively that it is not, we will shut it down without recourse or explanation. Habitual offenders will be warned and risk losing their posting privileges. Thank you in advance."
Trey Parker and Matt Stone were upset when their film Orgazmo received an x-rating. They felt that their art was being compromised. They didn’t get a lot of support, because in the final analysis Orgazmo was just a bad movie. It didn’t stand on its own merits.
Very simply the rule should be “If you are going to go there, it better be good.”
