Ruffian and Binarydrone, check your email.

Except that one time where you came right out and admitted to trolling. But other than that tiny exception…
But regardless of past offenses, you STILL haven’t adressed any of my points and your entire rebuttal seems to be “Nyahh-nyahh! I win! I’ve got my LALALALALA fingers in my LALALALALA ears and can’t LALALALALA hear you! I win”
Bad form.

Watch out! You’re being vulgar, obscene, and profane!
And you loove it baaaaaaaaaabeeeeeeee!
So Lib is part Indian? And he actually thought that had something to do with people being annoyed by him? Exactly how egocentric is this guy to think that most of us even KNOW (or care) about his ethnic background?
Scylla
You and I might disagree about modal logic, but your post was inspirational. I just hope that everybody else can follow your excellent lead and grow the hell up.
And you are who, please?
Binarydrone, I’m pretty sure that Lynn was just being ironic with the “tone” comment. OP’s that consist primarily of smilie abuse and and sentences that are ungrammatical to the point of being undecypherable get locked off. Nothing new, thank god.
Scylla, if your “it better be good” post went into the UA verbatim, I would be such a happy man. Concise, cogent, and damned good policy.
And as for Lib’s “injun” comment, I didn’t think that it had anything to do with his actual ethnicity… I assumed that it was an analogy about how poorly-armed people tend to be overwhelmed in battle.
A veritable trail of tears.
Lib AND grienspace-get off the fucking cross already!
Yeesh!
Scylla, define “good.” I’m asking because I’ve written some posts that I thought were damn good, only to get nary a response, while others that I’ve tossed off with hardly a thought behind them have been praised. The vast majority of posters here found your thread to be good and unworthy of being closed, and yet it was. IMHO, “good” is too vague a word to allow a policy to be defined around. (Hell, if “good” becomes a requirement for posting, I expect to be banned, since I can’t compete with the skills of many of the posters here.)
As for “raising the standards” around here, why? One of the things I like about this place is that you can have an erudite discussion about something in one thread, and then click over to another thread and cheer the death of a white supremacist, or discuss your favorite sex scene in a movie.
If we want a “tamer” (and lamer) Dope, then why don’t we go back to the bobbyboard with its bionic hamsters? And if “raising the standards” is a first step to making this place a pay site (as one poster speculated), then the Reader’s not going to get a dime out of me! If I gotta pay for the right to post, then I want to be able to say what I want, how I want! (After all, I am paying for it!)
Were you folks Kremlinologists in previous lives?
This is getting more than a little wierd…
This is getting way out of hand.
I swear, you do one dumb thing and everybody goes crazy on you.
I screwed up. I’m sorry. Scylla’s thread is reopened.
No excuses given – there are none – but I will state some reasons.
My duties here are such that outside of Threadspotting I rarely see anything but troublesome postings and respond mostly to complaints. I read much more for enforcement than anything else. That skews my view of what is acceptable and what is not. My assumption has tended to be if it’s offensive to someone besides myself it’s right out. This apparently is not exactly so.
And currently I am under incredible stress in my personal life – it’s basically going right to hell out from under me in about every possible way – this has perhaps clouded my judgment, especially as many of the things I have had to do in this time period have been of the “run and gun” variety. I have to admit I have not always seen things with absolute clarity and have made quite a few decisions over the recent past that I have come to deeply regret. Including this one.
But enough about my screwups. Let me try to set things aright here.
Our policies are being reformulated - this was going on before my error in judgment – and we will be giving you guidelines as we hash them out. This is an ongoing procedure and the reason why you haven’t heard more from our staff on these issues.
You’ll be able to read the guidelines in the “sticky” notes in About This Message Board and ultimately in the soon to come updated all purpose FAQ (currently under construction). The new guidelines will not be a departure from what’s gone before, but more of a restatement of how management expects things to be around here. Over time standards have slipped and people sometimes get the wrong impression about what’s acceptable and what’s not and we want to correct that.
Check ATMB first for guidance on the topic of your choosing if you are uncertain; that’s where you’ll first see these guidelines. You may also write the moderators of the affected forum and ask them for a ruling, you always have that option in any situation. It’s always better to ask first.
Again, my apologies to everyone.

Hooray!
We love you, Jenny.
Groovy.
Thanks for the explanation and apology Jenny.
Now, what can we as Dopers do to assist you in your search for paid employment - between us we have some pretty awesome contacts.
BTW, if you feel the need to rant about the stuff going on in your personal life, I know this great messageboard which has a forum dedicated to that purpose.

A classy post. This is but one of the many reasons why you’re one of the two Goddesses of the SDMB!

Yeah, I have to agree being the author of one of those threads. Why did mine fall through the cracks?
I didn’t find Scylla’s post offensive either, and I had no idea that this “raising the tone” issue was being discussed at the time, else I might have hesitated in writing it.
I am not as articulate as the rest of you, but there’s going to have to be some hard and fast rules or else the closing of Scylla’s post and letting mine remain open makes no sense, and weakens our whole community.
I sure didn’t set out to offend anyone and I’m sure Scylla didn’t either, but it looks like my post got ignored by the complaining parties and his did not, hence the closing.
What do y’all think?
Thanks
Quasi
Classy, classy, Tuba. High Praises to you. And thank you – good call! I sure hope things improve on the personal front for you soon. You do know that if you need anything at all, all you’d have to do is post something here and you’d find the most supportive and helpful group of people in the universe, right? Sometimes being humble doesn’t yield you the best results – just food for thought. Take care of yourself, ya hear! (And email me if you want to trade any job hunting tips!)
Yikes! Didn’t see **Tuba’s[/'b] re-post. Please excuse the error!
