Jesus, Guin, get over YOURself. Way to focus on the larger issues. indeed, squared, and tied in a bow with sparklies. Seems lately like I can’t get through a pit thread without seeing you weigh in with your opinion of one poster or another.
Like most of the other people in the threads revolving around this issue…I feel that the “tone” used when the labia thread was closed was dismissive, arbitrary and uninformative. The thread itself…I dunno, I thought it was a shame that so many people wasted their posts on “” rather than actually thinking about the thread…even if it was meant as a joke thread (which we’ll never know) there is a very interesting discussion that could have come of it, and I’m not talking about porn stars or fisting videos. I mean videos about fisting, not actually attempting to fist a video. You know what I mean. I actually had a post…an  -less post…in mind, and was sorta sorry to see it locked.
Aren’t these the same mods who said this place isn’t “Romper Room” and that we will discuss things that aren’t suitable for all ages? Aren’t these the same mods who have encouraged the use of the abbreviation ‘TMI’ to indicate potentially offensive material? And now they tell us that we have to ‘raise the tone’ of this place, as if we were expecting ‘company’ and had to impress them. They did this not in the approved way, by creating a sticky at the top of each forum, but by insulting a long-time member in good standing in a way that was singularly unclear.
If they are going to be as capricious as a May breeze, they shall destroy the SDMB more completely than a registration fee, for they will lose the fair-minded and intelligent among us.
Oh for crying out loud, I hate it when you realize after posting that there’s a second page of comments and your post now has no relevant meaning!
As to the OP, I seriously doubt there’s a whole new shift in policy here. I imagine Tuba will come in at some point and explain because Scylla’s thread was funny and informative at the same time and certainly not vulgar. I’ve never had to copulate with a Dixie chick before and found the narrative interesting.
I respect Tuba’s decision making abilities and look forward to some light being shed.
At the moment I can only think of Alexander Pope’s ‘Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot’ (at line 308): “Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel.” - as borrowed by William Rees-Mogg in a famous Sunday Times leader in 1967.
I am unhappy that ‘censorship’ has become a hijacked concept (by politicians) to mean only perceived positives (vote winners like “protecting the children”), when it has, IMHO, a far more significant social cost: On important issues, it negates the ability to fight ignorance.
No, it’s not simply a question of protecting children vs. freedom of speech. I hope to (try to) contribute further when time permits.
Why did you do that? Didn’t you hear the cricket chirping? That’s what they do when they’re, um, lookin’ for love. (Can we still say that here? Is it too much information?) Here you’ve gotten that lonely cricket all excited, tempting him, tormenting him, and then you shut him down. How could you, woman? Have you no mercy? Won’t somebody think of the crickets?
Oh, and put me in the “What the heck is going on around here?” camp.
Perhaps Scylla’s posts just bring out the dominatrix in women? Possibly a natural response to the joyful scream of rage and pain
It looks like the request/policy to not post about overly graphic material has been in effect for over a year but it hasn’t been consistently enforced.
Can’t say that I am big fan of the ‘bleeding my heart out with TMI’ threads. Therefore I don’t read them. Need I say more?
I will anyway,
This is arbitrary censorship since it attacks things like tastefulness in choice of subject matter and not offensiveness or illegalities. The latter two are much easier to define as rules of the game, while the first is as I said arbitrary.
Arbitrary rules fosters reluctance and insecurity, as in; “Dare I post this?” That is not a spirit of open debate.
That being said I return to my first statement. The BBQ Pit is really in sad state. Sometimes I wonder why half of all the threads are in here and not in MPSIMS. Is it just with the purpose of circumventing the rules against overtly colorful language or what? That’s fine by me, but last time I checked the purpose of the BBQ Pit was;
So flame away at whatever you need to AFAIAC, but if you want to bleed and bawl about the drudgery of your life, get your ass back to MPSIMS and use the appropriate level of language. So you might say; “why not move the thread?” Honestly, if I were a moderator I wouldn’t know what to do to, since once it is in the Pit it is bound to contain enough offensive language and/or invective to be unmovable.
In summary
As per the communicated rules from the administration and IMHO: If Tuba’s intent was to stop Scylla from talking about his balls and sperm count she was in the wrong. If the intent was to purge the Pit from MPSIMS like threads that are unmovable due to language content; say so.
Then there is the possibility that there is a new rule. I hope not. Enforcing the existing rules should be enough and in this case my interpretation would have to be: Scylla, you fucked up by posting an MPSIMS like thread in the Pit with such language in it that it should be closed, due to being immovable.
I’m raving here so…
Flame me if you must - we are in the Pit after all.
Just don’t ask me about my sperm count or why the fuck I hate it when one of my golf partners doesn’t get dressed for the occasion, cause I ain’t bound to answer, since it is MPSIM not S.
So it seems there is some kind of internal debate going on.
Oh, and Sparc, there’s no need for you to explain your problem with your golf partner. I think everyone fully appreciates how distracting a naked golfer can be.
Face it people. The mods can do whatever they want. I do think however that locking some sex related threads was a little overboard. But I have noticed in the last week the amount of sex and drug related threads has increased slightly. Maybe they were just trying to clean it up a bit and get back to the normal inane topics.
