Rejecting the far right candidate. Lets hope the polls hold up.
Le Pen has conceded.
I was discussing a trip to Europe with my wife and kids next March. We had come to the decision that a win for Macron meant Paris. A win for Le Pen meant Spain.
I’m glad the majority of French voters were sensible.
Great news! No telling when we might need them to help liberate us again.
Another fucking Trump was the last thing the world needed. Good fucking riddance, Le Pen.
+1
Although I must admit I was looking forward just a little bit to reimplementation of the guillotine.
Thank the gods that fascist bitch went down in flames.
While I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment, last I looked she was on track to get twice as many votes as the last time the National Front was in the finals. I’d say Macron has bought some time — perhaps quite a bit of time — but the beast is far from dead.
Instead they’ll change the national anthem from “La Marseillaise” to “Hot For Teacher”.
I never thought LePen had a prayer, and the pollsters never gave her a chance. Trump’s win had people fearing “The polls are never right,” but this time they were spot on.
The polls were “right” with Trump too, as the results fell within the margin for error.
That worries me too. However if a far right candidate wins and people see that Islamic terrorism still happens it could dilute some of their support going forward.
However the far right candidate can also easily use the attack to clamp down on civil and political rights.
There was also Brexit; and did the pollsters give LePen a prayer at making the run-off? It’s good to get evidence that the entire world has not gone insane.
France choose an Elecktra Complex having unknown, incompetent over an actual Nazi sympathizer.
What you congratulating them for again? Is the cupboard that bare?
Yes, it actually is. See also: Donald fucking Trump.
Now Macron actually has to do the work. France is not yet liberated from its own problems yet. If he screws up, the FN could well come roaring back the next time around.
Brexit and Trump won close elections that were ALWAYS predicted to be close.
Yes, LePen WAS expected to be in the runoff. In a crowded field, she was bound to make the top two. But once it was down to her and any other opponent, no poll ever showed her within 20 points of the lead.
(emphasis mine)
This is the opposite of reality.
The polls missed Le Pen by about 10 points. Nationally, they got Trump about right. And even if you cherry-pick states, no state aggregate was off by that margin.
Look, the reality is, LePen was NEVER in striking distance in any poll. Her fans (and her more paranoid foes) were convinced she was much stronger than the polls suggested, and liked to say, “The polls said Trump and Brexit would lose, too.”
In reality, LePen WAS as far behind as she appeared to be. I’m not sure what you think you’re refuting.
