“Rep. Gary Condit has hired a criminal defense lawyer and called police to set up a second interview to talk about his relationship with a California woman who has been missing for nearly two months”
This just looks bad.
If this guy (as he claims) has nothing to hide is hiring a criminal attorney the best way to reinforce this notion among his constituents or is this just simple prudence even if he’s innocent of involvement with her dissapearance, but did have an affair of sorts with her (as now seems quite possible)? If innocent why not just fess up re the affair and take the heat? He may not get re-elected but at least he won’t have people thinking that he’s a possible murderer.
He is a public figure. Whether he is a scoundrel, or a saint, has a thousand witnesses to his alibi or none, is totally innocent, or blatantly guilty, no prosecutor in the country is going to let the opportunity pass to impanel a grand jury to investigate things.
Just the fact that the public at large is accusing him of a crime makes it unlikely that he will escape the formal investigation of his involvement with the events of this woman’s life prior to her disappearance. The matter is criminal in nature, he is going to be investigated, and he needs a lawyer who has the proper background.
The act of obtaining competent counsel is now an admission of guilt. Wonderful. Justice by media takes a giant step forward.
