For a serious choice: “Money” by the Lovin’ Spoonful is a lesson on how capitalism works.
Five years ago, National Review came up with their own list of the 50 best conservative rock songs:
http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/217737/rockin-right/john-j-miller
As even the author notes, many of the artists who wrote and performed these songs are NOT conservatives by any stretch of the imagination… but the themes frequently are.
To use one example, Don Henley is as liberal as anybody, but the Eagles’ “Get Over It” is still a great conservative song.
John Lydon is vocally pro-choice, but it’s hard to listen to the Sex Pistols’ “Bodies” and not be repulsed by the concept of abortion.
Vernon Reid is no Republican, but Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” is still a great conservative anthem.
What’s conservative about Cult of Personality?
I can see cons taking Randy Newman’s “Drop the Big One” non-ironically.
Wanna name me some other songs that are anti-Stalin and anti-JFK?
Because the only reason anyone would vote for somebody like Barack Obama or Bill Clinton is because they’re a foolish liberal who is blinded by their celebrity charisma. This is, of course, totally different from the way thoughtful conservatives vote for Ronald Reagan or Sarah Palin.
It’s also anti-Mussolini.
Backdoor Man by *The Doors *- espouses letting the free market handle desegregation.
(Take a Walk on the) Wild Side by Lou Reed - industrious young men pull themselves up by the bootstraps seeking employment in New York.
***Legal Tender **by the B-52’s *- acknowledges that money is good.
“The Internationale” – The yearning of all peoples to throw off their overbearing governments.
“Born In The USA” – The importance of native-born citizenship.
“Imagine” – A paean to freedom from Democrat wars and Jeremiah-Wright-style false prophets.
From the link in the OP:
*98. YMCA by Village People – This song praises youth activities at the Young Men’s Christian Association; one of the biggest hits of alltime. *
ROFLMAO
In what sense was Ayn Rand an atheist? She acknowledged her own existence, didn’t she?
I’ve heard this one seriously suggested, on the grounds that only pencil-necked geeks actually listen to the words of anything but the chorus.
Animal (Fuck like a Beast) - WASP. WASP = White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, right?
What, no America, Fuck Yeah! by Trey Parker?
Actually, that one kind of works. Fuck Like a Beast was a focus of the PRMC hearings. Obscenity in music was one of Al Gore’s causes celebre before [del]ManBearPig[/del] global warming, and conservatives hate Gore, so anything that he opposed they’d be for. I think.
While the National Review list makes somewhat more sense, there is still evidence that the compiler(s) weren’t paying attention to the entire song. Example: The Georgia Satellites “Keep Your Hands To Yourself”, described as "An outstanding vocal performance, with lyrics that affirm old-time sexual mores: “She said no huggy, no kissy until I get a wedding vow.”
Which he doesn’t give her. Moral: nice girl loses boyfriend.
“Hurricane,” Bob Dylan: Demonstrates the fairness of the American justice system by showing that even a famous athlete cannot avoid doing time for murder
“God,” John Lennon: Affirms the existence of God* while denouncing belief in false idols like Buddha, Kennedy and the Beatles
“Private Dancer,” Tina Turner: Because without songs like this, the Democrats would be imposing socialized collective dancers on us
“Drug Store Truck Driving Man,” The Byrds: OK, I haven’t actually heard it**, but Joan Baez dedicated the song to then-governor Ronald Reagan when she covered it at Woodstock, so it’s gotta be conservative
“God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind),” Randy Newman: When so many songs mock God and faith, it’s heartwarming to hear one about God’s love for His creation, man
*Mainly as “a concept by which we measure our pain” but let’s not pick nits
**I really have heard it (Just to head off anyone who feels the need to explain to me what the song’s about)
Well, at least the band’s name has a nice biblical ring.
