I said I would check back and let you know how long it took to come on. It started coming on at the 10 min point, barely noticeable, by 20 min it had come on pretty good and it seemed to peek at 30 minutes. I had eaten about 2 hours ago.
I feel I should mention some of the bad things possible, maybe not in your case. It does make you spacey and you are more inclined to shift attention. More likely to burn things when cooking and smoke up the house, more inclined to leave water running, you might forget where you put things, I use an audible timer for anything that takes over 3 minutes. You might have to write things down that you don’t normally write down. Weight gain and a craving for sweets are a real possibility. You might experience a hard time sleeping on the days you don’t use if you are using more than 3 times a week…You might find your self becoming talkative to people you would normally avoid.
I can’t think of much else, but overall I would still say it has been a huge positive in my life.
Exactly! The name of the strain can give a vague-ish-makes-sense-if-you-try-it indication of what the effects are, or at least according to the people who bred that particular strain. So if you’re looking for a specific effect, it can take some trial and error.
I’ve never been a smoker of anything, so haven’t smoked it.
Acquaintances have persuaded me to try it in cookie form a couple of times, but it really didn’t seem to have any significant effect on me. Maybe it was weak stuff, or perhaps my physiology is just not very susceptible to it?
But anyway, as far as I’m concerned: meh…
In general to mellow out and relax look for strains of Indica, for an energetic creative headspace go for Sativa’s. Hybrids is what I find most available but I prefer strains of Sativa for the get off my ass and do something effect.
As I remember from 50 years ago, the first few times you consume it, typically nothing will happen, but then you’ll use it and have the effect. I remember trying it probably a couple times with my roommate, to no avail. Then we were visiting his family for the weekend, and it worked. We were laying about in the evening watching television, and I felt this… nice creeping feeling. I looked over at him and we exchanged knowing glances, and his younger sister was none the wiser.
But since then, I don’t think I’ve heard of this “first few times” thing. Is it real?
With that cheap Mexican weed and it’s low THC content it happened a lot. You would be coughing, your eyes turning red, maybe even getting a headache, maybe didn’t manage to keep much smoke in your lungs for very long. You don’t hear that about the stuff available now. I don’t remember anyone not noticing the effect of consuming brownies that were effective for others. I don’t think it’s ‘real’ in the way it’s described. And I do remember the weed getting better as over time. I remember a couple of times people were told they wouldn’t get high the first time but after consuming some Maui Wowie they sat on the floor swaying to the music for a long time.
This was my recent experience as well. After a 40 year hiatus I had occasion to be in Missouri last week and purchased 40 5mg gummies (sativa). The first two nights of using (I ate two each night) the effects were minimal. Nights 3 and 4, however, were very enjoyable.
I also smoked a couple of buds with the relatives I was visiting, which was very nice, and ended up making a second visit to a retail outlet for a couple of 16% THC pre-rolls before exiting the state. I’m looking forward to certain social events later this summer.
You just unlocked a 40+ year old memory. That was definitely the case with me.
But it was this.
I use cannabis pretty much every day. I also have a few drinks pretty much every day. I also periodically take a tolerance break (no cannabis for two weeks) without any issues. I also will occasionally stop drinking for a week or two with no issues.
For me, cannabis and alcohol “tweak” my enjoyment of life.
^^^What he said.
Maryland went legal for recreational use July 1 and a store five minutes from my house has obtained a license, much to the dismay of our Republican county commissioners.
The county vote last November was just about 60-40 in favor, which surprised me a great deal since we are a red county in general.
Haven’t patronized yet because I’m still stocked from my recent trip to Missori.
This seems to be pretty typical. It seems like most people it doesn’t have any effect on the first time. 60 years ago for me. The first time it had no effect at all, second time it stoned me.
When I tried cannabis again after years of not having it, I bought three .5g prerolls from a dispensary and smoked them all, one after another after not feeling anything, and did not get the least bit high. People have told me that was a lot. (The next time, just a single deep drag did me fine.) Same with the first time I had marijuana back in college. It didn’t take until the third or fourth time, and then it hit me hard.
These days, I commonly see people in the ER that got hit harder than they expected, I would suggest assuming anything you try is the equivalent of 151 proof until proven otherwise.
Could you say more, if you know, about what this is like? Are they really in medical trouble? Are there things they did other than just overconsuming that contributed to this? Given that people may not really know how much they can handle, obviously consuming conservatively is a safeguard; are there any other safe practice recommendations?
My experience, which might be what outlierrn is talking about:
It was legalized in California in 2016, and I got back into it in 2019 or so after not having had any for thirty or forty years. I enjoyed it, but I soon realized that this modern stuff is really strong. Even though I was always cautious about how big of a toke I took, every once in awhile it hit me super hard. Twice, the highs ballooned up into full-blown panic attacks. The second one was so terrifying that that was the last toke I took and I’ll never have any more. I can’t risk feeling like that again, ever.
The other danger I hear often is of people trying edibles for the first time and after not feeling anything after a while, taking additional edibles. Start slow with those: like take the equivalent of 2.5 mg THC the first time, and see how it feels after two hours. If nothing, try again the next day with 5 mg. Somewhere in the range of 5-10mg should be fine for beginners. My happy spot is just a simple 5 mg. 10 can start getting me towards the more paranoid and anxiety-inducing highs. Others I know take 50mg at a time, so it varies by person and experience.
I use a lot of cannabis and have enjoyed it since my teens. I’ll happily ingest 100 mg. Paranoia? If I reach a point where I experience paranoia I enjoy that because rationally I know that means I’ve reached a “high point”. So I sit back and enjoy the paranoia, laughing in its face.
That gets pricey, at least here. I’m happy with 5 making me happy. A baggie of 100mg lasts me a good month, and is a hell of a lot cheaper than other habits I’ve had (alcohol, tobacco) even though I live in a state that apparently is pricey when it comes to cannabis (Illinois.) If I get overly high, it’s not pretty. I took one hit years ago at a concert, and I spent the next half hour truly thinking I was about to die, with my heart racing, vision blurring, and thoughts fracturing. Absolutely nothing enjoyable about that for me, and that put me off for a number of years, but my previous experiences with marijuana were kind of like that: one out of every four or five tries, I would not have a good experience. Now, with knowing how much THC is in the product, it’s a lot easier not to overdo it. I’ve had a couple of slightly uncomfortable highs, but nothing nearing my previous experiences.
