Conspiracy theory re Sandy Hook, Aurora, etc.

Please, help me respond to someone in my family who takes this disturbingly seriously.

Don’t see what the problem is; the author states quite clearly that they’re all merely coincidences.

My mother’s name is “Sandy”, and I work with a girl named “Sandy!” Someone help me!

Yes, well, that is for sane people. Paranoid people think that “The FBI should be all over Hollywood on this one to discover who in Hollywood was aware of the plan to do the Sandy Hook shooting.”

And that’s who I am dealing with here.

“Wow, that’s really interesting. Say, did you catch last night’s Tonight Show? That Jay Leno, he sure is a funny guy.”

Then they’ll start in on how Carson was far superior, which is of course something you can agree with, and you’ll never ever bring up conspiracy theories again.

There’s no way to win with crazy. Redirection and distraction are your only viable options.

Just to be clear, both I and the blogger were being sarcastic. I first became aware of that douchebag when I read one of his anti-vax screeds and noticed he’d also posted some conspiracy theory bullshit about the Aurora shooting. WhyNot’s is probably the only useful advice you’ll get in your unfortunate situation. (Unless you’d prefer mine, which is “cut off all contact with your lunatic relative and consider yourself lucky.”)
