Constantine movie

Words cannot describe how large my “oh you are shitting me?!” moment was when i first saw the details for this film :frowning:

Don’t leap straight to the “Oh Jesus, the comic geeks are off on one…” conclusion so quickly.

This isn’t a case of “OMG THEY GOT HIS COSTUME COLOUR WRONG!!!111” its a situation whereby the movie bears nigh-on no resemblance to the material on which its supposedly based.

Why does that matter?

Because its a waste of a good premise and a potentially good film plot. If you’re going to make a film thats so drastically different from the source then why bother using the hellblazer licence anyway?

Please tell me the train wreck in question was not summoned forth by Mike Carey’s pen. (It couldn’t have been. It couldn’t have been . . .)

If you’re bashing Catwomen and praising Marvel, obviously you never saw Punisher.

No, the adaption was written by Steven Seagle. I could be spelling his name wrong. He was the writer on Sandman Mystery Theatre a couple of years ago. I like his writing. He shows a lot of imagination, good charaterization, and tight plots.

None of which you would have seen in this adaptation he had to write.

Punisher wasn’t a good adaptation either (the comic Punisher would never play stupid mind-games and set his enemies against each other; he’d just go in guns a-blazing… and what was with moving the setting to TAMPA?), but at least it was recognizable. Even Daredevil, in all its mediocrity, was well-intentioned and obviously made by someone who knew the comics. Marvel has Avi Arad in place to make sure the Hollywood projects are done SOME justice.

But the DC movies since Burton’s Batman 1 and 2 have been a different story. Catwoman, like Steel and Batman and Robin before it, and Constantine sure to follow, was a travesty, a complete disregard of the source material by filmmakers who thought they were too good for comic books and, as it turns out, weren’t good enough to make watchable movies either.

I can’t comment much on how close they follow source material since I never followed DC comics and I haven’t read Marvel for 20 years. I can say that in my opinion the Punisher, Hulk, and Daredevil movies are no better (or worse) than Catwoman or some of the later Batman movies. The X-Men and Spiderman franchises are obviously far above these movies.
