A Texas cop issued a bogus citation to a black man for failing to produce his id. The cop then proceeded to handcuff the man and drag him down the street to the cop’s car. The cop was suspended for a whole 20 days.
From another article:
but
Unless the laws have recently changed, this is bullshit. He knew.
He’s either too stupid to work in law enforcement or he’s one of those muh authorituh types who have no business working in law enforcement. Since he has also emailed victims of crimes to tell them to think of the poor cops who had to do their damn jobs, I’m guessing both.
Aurora CO appears to be systemically fucked up
Apparently bad policing has infected other siren-using agencies.
You establish the “supress the threat”, and “minimize risk to yourself” mentality as the priorities.
Then train your people to make that Job One and provide them tools to make that happen.
And then are shocked, shocked that the public does not appreciate it.
This is a hypodoxical position, though. The context of modern policing exhibits a militaristic face. That makes police the domestic analogue of soldiers. A soldier’s duty is to support the army by willingly offering himself for sacrifice to further the cause. Self-preservation is not a design-feature of combat.
In other words, the police need to choose a side. They either must be soldiers or they must shed the attitude.
Many already chose and they are soldiers. You just gotta realize that their “side” is “other cops” and not “the public at large”.
…meanwhile, in New Zealand:
Yes: the police displayed the KFC across the boot of their car like they had made the drug-bust of the century. And I love this bit:
Officer O’Leary from the Wellington Paranormal Division had this to say:
“How many fries were there?”
“Mfffgh glumphss” (sound of fries being stuffed into police mouths)
“Unknown at this time”
The suspect was found with 10 large fries. After we secured the 8 large fries, we transported all 5 to the station, and ensured that the 3 empty fry containers were logged in evidence.
Louisiana:
Shit, I’ve read a few articles about the LA County Sheriff’s Dept over the years, but he’s running the county like a police state now.
Sounds like he’s taken a page out of Arpaio’s handbook. Throw in some in-custody deaths and Driving While Brown sweeps and he’ll have a hat trick.
I was thinking more Hoover than Arpaio. Secret teams of investigators trying to find dirt on duly-appointed inspectors general and non-profits directed by civilian watchdogs, hidden from even other members of the department, and a disconcerting similarity between many deputies and a street gang amid all the other shit?
That’s my take as well – this guy looks like he’s gone full-on Hoover or Huey Long, using police power to attack political enemies.
Sheriffs are generally the nastiest, most cut-throat of all the politicians out there. Growing up in the South, I can recall some pretty vicious campaigns, which included threats of violence and outright violence itself in some cases. It’s also a common practice for incoming, newly-elected sheriffs to fire pretty much anyone even suspected of having remotely supported or voted for the defeated incumbent.
If there’s a person you absolutely never want to fuck with, it’s a sheriff.
Looking at it from the outside, the entire institution seems flawed. Law enforcement should be professionals, not elected officials.
Absolutely - I’ve never understood this about our system. We have elected judges, district attorneys and attorneys general, and sheriffs. More “democracy” is not always a good thing.
I have always been really happy that in my country these positions are all filled by professionals, and are not overtly political in nature.
In the U.S., states tend to have a little too much democracy (if you’re white); the federal level seems to have to little.
Here’s on the other end.
Officers do absolutely nothing to a teenager who injured 6 cyclists while trying a stupid and obnoxious prank:
I will wager a guess that the parents of the teenager are white, affluent and well known to the police.
Holy shit! Did you see all the damage in the pictures…
…to his truck? Come on, the poor boy has suffered enough.
