I realize now that I misunderstood her position….
The opposite, actually. She said we shouldn’t legalize cannabis because - if we do - illegal guns won’t be found.
Or, more accurately, it will be harder to find them.
I really don’t like the “I smell marijuana therefore I can search your car” exception. It makes the 4th Amendment effectively null-and-void, since a cop can simply lie and claim he smells it. (And there’s no consequences for the cop if he doesn’t find drugs during the search.) Bad court ruling.
Right. That is what I was misunderstanding.
It is not guns they are after, weed being illegal gives them an express lane to CAF, and once they get their hands on your cash, you have to fight tooth and nail to get it back, because cash is guilty until proven innocent. And, they do not even have to charge you with anything, they just take it, as evidence, of … something. Legalizing cannabis does not make CAF go away, but it makes it a little harder to justify.
Police dog, in the care and possession of his handler at home (a common practice) escapes into neighbor’s yard and mauls two year old girl and her father. Jury acquits on qualified immunity
Arrgh. Brain bleach. Do not read that.
The child sustained serious injuries, including a puncture fracture to her right femur that was audible when it occurred
Culpability should fall on the department, for its dog policy, and on the trainers, for failing to teach the dog to only attack on command.
That one was indeed grim and infuriating. Let’s lighten things up with the recent Florida arrest of Chuck E. Cheese
No idea if this is recent or old, but I just ran across it on imgur:
Edit: I see now that it’s from two years ago.
It may be at least partially about CAF, and hell, it may (at least partially) be about guns. But mostly it’s about keeping law enforcement and prosecutors busy. If they’re not fighting the War on Drugs, then we may have to take a closer look at why we’re paying them, you see. Which is why private prison corporations are so against marijuana legalization.
Anyway, here in Missouri, if a cop says, “I smell marijuana,” I can say, “yep, I just bought some legally, here’s my receipt.” (OK so actually I’ll tell him “I’m not answering any questions without an attorney present. Am I being detained?” But you get the idea.)
My guess is that “lady” would dispose of your entire constitution if it got an illegal anything off the market. Some people don’t deserve the freedom they enjoy heh.
Cop stops a guy and gets extremely interested in whether he got lunch or breakfast at Burger King. He calls for backup and three cops give the guy the third degree about it.
The whole thing could have been avoided if he’d just exercised his right to remain silent. The whole thing is so comically stupid.
Jeez. I love the call back to when he says “lunch”, which the cop just forgot or lied about or whatever. What an idiot cop – the other cops must be thinking, what the hell are we doing here?
‘Umm, officer? When you finish a midnight to eight shift do you go to the diner for breakfast… or dinner?’
This could go in either the Evil or Stupid MF thread, but I’m putting it here because we’re going to be seeing more incidents like this, and real police are going to get wounded or killed, while civilians are going to get shot for refusing police entry. I mean even more than are already getting shot.
Quoted for irony:
(Houston Police Detective) Stringer noted that real officers do not wear ski masks.
That line almost seemed like they were giving homeowners the go-ahead to use deadly force when someone wearing a mask says they have a warrant and tries to grab you or break into your house.
Good.
Now imagining a “how to tell an official tactical balaclava from a vulgar ski mask” handout available at precinct stations
Florida, of course.
