Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread #2

Hertz may not be the best choice for your next car rental

I hope the suit goes to trial (although I have no idea if it has anything like valid grounds) so that Hertz’ reasons for refusing to provide the receipt come to light.

He paid with a credit card. Shouldn’t his credit card company have a record of the charge, when and where?

the story includes

evidence of prosecutorial misconduct

It’s also a sign that that he probably didn’t have a great lawyer, because they might have thought of getting the cell phone or credit card records. (And surely the security camera footage at the airport would have proven where he was?)

In an ideal world, the prosecutor would serve the remainder of his sentence.

Prosecutors NEVER admit the guy was innocent.

I’m not sure why but I think this belongs in this thread:

On to the Supreme Court for 1st Amendment Smackdown!

It’s deja vu all over again … The SC has spoken

Although the preservation of liberty depends in part upon the maintenance of social order, the First Amendment requires that officers and municipalities respond with restraint in the face of verbal challenges to police action, since a certain amount of expressive disorder is inevitable in a society committed to individual freedom and must be protected if that freedom would survive.

In the past I would have felt confident that such a law wouldn’t survive first amendment scrutiny, but with this Supreme Court, who knows…

The court could rule that law enforcement is more important than speech rights. And, hello rabbithole.

Cops suck.

Tatum and Huffaker allegedly began impersonating agents with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), threatening to arrest their suspects and pocketing the items seized from the individuals they pulled over, almost a year after the interdiction team they had served shut down.

ACAB.
(Have to add letters here because otherwise it won’t post)

Or you could have just spelled it out for fucks sake, how many fewer keystrokes would that have been?

Or are you afraid to say “all cops are bastards” out loud, so you have to whisper it with an acronym?

Even in England, where they can’t carry guns.

More proof that just because someone was given a badge doesn’t mean that they are not a racist, misogynist, thief, violent psychopath or murderer.

This murder has really kicked off a big conversation over here about how women have come to live with the fear of walking about at night or in isolated places, and how wrong it is that we seem to have accepted that. Rightly, women are shouting loudly about how things need change.

For the avoidance of doubt, the man in question has been arrested and charged but not yet tried and of course may not be convicted.

UK law is very strict on contempt of court and trials have been derailed because of public statements asserting the accused’s guilt.

There’s a lot of other nastiness assorted with this.

  1. There was a public vigil for Sarah; the police were told by court it could be done lawfully if they engaged with the organisers to make it so; they refused to work with them; then they went in mob-handed and at a vigil for a murdered woman violently detained and arrested peaceful women
  2. One woman at the even was flashed by a low-life - when she reported this to police at the event they said they couldn’t be bothered.

This is one I hadn’t heard of before.

Attempted murder charges have been filed nearly a year after a shooting, in which two members of the sheriff’s department shot an unarmed man in the back, killing him. As of the time of this article, only one of the officers has been charged, even though the other one fired first. It is not known who fired the fatal shot, which is perhaps the reason for the attempted murder charge.

The victim is white, and did have meth in his system. He was the passenger in a car pulled over for a traffic stop. Because they were “acting suspicious” they were taken out of the car and patted down. No gun was found.

The victim attempted to run when a plastic bag was found in his pocket. He wrestled with the police for a few seconds, and then succeeded in running away. He was shot in the back as he fled.

There is (still unreleased) video of the incident, but one of the officer’s body camera was allegedly knocked to the ground in the struggle, so it only has audio for the shooting (according to reports).

For an added WTF, the victim was well liked in the small community, and the people there wanted to protest at the sheriff’s office. This was right around when George Floyd was killed, so nobody in the community demonstrated because they were worried people would think they were supporting BLM.
