Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread #2

Well, this is horrifying. Even the DA is now saying innocent.

Also, it is a badly written article.

The shooting survivor, and lone witness, later said detectives pressured her into identifying Strickland — who was acquitted in 1979 during his first trial, but ultimately convicted by a jury of capital murder just two months later.

Something seriously wrong with this sentence.

With video and analysis,

Per DA, the stop itself was illegal. They made it illegal because it was used as a pretext to pull over black and hispanic drivers. The cop’s report did not match the dashcam video (lying jackbooted thugs) and BOTH cops going to the driver’s side window is just plain weird.

I’m sure we’ll see consequences any day now.

Maybe the DOD should charge the Fairfax police with being national security risks, if they run around randomly arresting people with top secret clearances.

Typo Negative, thanks for coming up with what is almost definitely the reason those cops filed those fake reports. Maybe they were together, maybe they were covering for each other, and they just didn’t think it was all that important.

All just accused so far, of course. I suppose there could be some other explanation.

Jesus Christ, where do you think anyone would have stats for all of that? I’m serious - where do you think there would ever be stats for questions as precise as that? You’re not moving the goalposts, you’re setting up a whole new game in which nobody can challenge you so win by default.

It is, but I am not really seeing how it amounts to a “controversial encounter with LE”, which is misbehavior (often lethal) on the part of one or more LEOs. This was a gross miscarriage of justice, and a white person probably would not have fared as poorly as did Strickland.

I’m sure lots of Dopers are like me and remember when this went down lo these many years ago now; it’s fucked up that there’s not been closure yet.

I think Dr. Farley’s apology was pretty good; I believe he understands why and how he screwed up and that he really does regret it beyond his own misfortune. At least, I hope he does.

Here’s one that just keeps on generating new controveries:

Just a reminder that everything in these threads isn’t new:

The controversial encounter with LE was the detectives pressuring the witness to make a false identification.

Although it probable that these guilty cops are all dead now, they trained other cops, who in turn trained other cops…

Pressuring witnesses to lie is, and has always been, business as usual.

Judges are law enforcement, right?

So, there have been several posts of LE and LE adjacent folk doing heinous stuff off duty and not directly related to their jobs. I’m not completely convinced that these belong in this thread.

But maybe they do. Alot of us grew up hearing that the police and the courts were the ultimate authority. And many involved in those professions hold themselves up as paragons of virtue. So maybe it is worth pointing out when they turn out to be just as unvirtuous as the rest of us.

I don’t know how to feel about it.

DNA exonerated both men. They were targeted because of a rumor that they might be involved. Pressured into confessions they did not understand (they were intellectually disabled )

The half brothers were originally questioned by police on the basis of a rumor that they might have been involved in the crime. The state then built its case against McCollum and Brown on the basis of confessions that law enforcement officers wrote out and had the half brothers sign. Both were convicted and sentenced to death on the basis of those confessions.

Getting the truth is not important. Easily convicting black guys will do just fine.

The cowardly and incompetent should get their jobs back.

AND get back pay. Because…the Judge is dick.

Jamal Sutherland, a mentally ill person the jailers tasered and pepper sprayed, who then died:

Jesus. fucking. Christ.

They had him in a cell. He was unarmed. They had a team. A team of people with all sorts of implements to subdue him, probably none of which were necessary.

These people are trained to be sociopaths.

You know, when people say “Defund the police,” videos like these make it clear, this refrain is not outside the realm of sanity.

Call me weird, but I actually sorta empathize with ‘cowardly’ cops who hide during mass shootings. There’s all sorts of confusion. They probably experienced disorientation, which in turn led to paralytic fear - I get it.

I think the point is, people wonder how such people pass background checks that allow them to hold the kinds of power that police officers have.

Holy cow! Check out this follow-up story:

:exploding_head:

This happened in Scotland; imagine how this would have unfolded in the US:

The words don’t do the situation justice, tho; here’s a 3:49 video that shows this.

Again, imagine this situation happening in the US. Would it have ended this way?
