Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread #2

as she begged a judge not to accept a plea deal she says was struck in secret without her knowledge

As an aside, I find the trend towards giving victims and their families access/approval over prosecution decisions troubling. I’m certain I’d like to have input if my kid was dead, but my understanding of the basis of criminal law is that the offense is considered to be against the whole of the citizenry (hence charges listed as “The people vs. John Doe”), partially to remove the ‘personal retribution’ facet of the punishment.

I’m sorry someone you loved is dead, but how much you loved them or how good (or bad) of a person they are (and the ‘they’ here could be either the victim or the killer) should not be a factor in determining their guilt or the extent of the punishment.

Yep, I agree with that. It’s just an invitation to grandstanding in court (not that this was necessarily that) and gives an advantage to those who are very expressive over those who are naturally reticent of expressing feelings in public (like me).

I can see why they wanted it to be secret. It is a sweetheart deal. Funk is either a liar or a coward. He could be both. This trying to do the absolute minimum and avoid a riot.

Delke will serve a three-year prison sentence. As part of the agreement, he won’t pursue parole or appeal the case. However, Delke’s defense team said he will likely serve a year and a half in jail with standard credits.

Funk also called it “significant progress” that “tonight will be the first night Nashville has had a police officer in jail for shooting a Black man on duty.”

For 18 months. They have set the price for taking a black life. 18 months. He would’ve gotten a longer sentence for …fuck, just about anything.

You may have lost at a trial, but at least you would have stood for something.

Technically not an interaction with a civilian—well, other than the mayor—but fits the theme of this thread nonetheless.

we’re getting a lot of double posts these days…
Typo_Negative beat you by 24hrs!

A few days ago, the LAPD stopped a semi carrying 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks. The stop happened in a residential neighborhood, and the LAPD determined that the fireworks were too dangerous to move and that the best course of action was to detonate all the fireworks right there in a controlled manner.

The resulting not-as-controlled-as-they-prolly-would-have-liked explosion demolished the truck, the bomb squad truck, numerous nearby cars and trucks and parts of several houses. 17 people were injured.

Here’s a 3 minute news video from the day after:

The FBI is now interested in the cause of death listed on Mr. Greene’s autopsy:

Florida cop convicted of forcing a teenage couple to strip naked and run around while he watched.

Usually, posts are about police officers but this one is about a judge:

He also sexually assaulted one of them.

Man, how does a person sleep at night after doing these evil things. I can barely even allow myself to contemplate the thought process that must go on.

Just awful.

No violence or other terrible outcomes here; just a police officer who apparently doesn’t even know the traffic laws that he’s supposed to be enforcing.

Short summary: cop pulls bicycle rider over for legally riding on the road. Tells him he should be riding on the sidewalk, which is illegal for riders 12 years and over in the state of Georgia unless permitted by local ordinance.

Bridgeton Police Officer Charged with Civil Rights Violation and Filing False Police Report

Officer pepper sprays handcuffed man and then lies about why.

That was the basic info, but to expand a bit,
Feds indict N.J. police officer who pepper sprayed handcuffed suspect

The chief said he was surprised at the indictments. While the department fully cooperated with federal investigators, the chief said his command staff investigated the use of force on their own, part of a standard review initiated in 2015, and discipline was delivered internally.

“The matter was subsequently reviewed by the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office with a no further action recommendation,” the chief said.

Internal discipline: handsmack: Bad officer. Don’t do it again.

“We have reviewed ourselves and determined that we did nothing seriously wrong.”

Another evil dick seeking higher office. He will, no doubt, make racism his platform.

If that’s all you’re known for to the general public, that’s your platform.

Remember the two brothers a few days ago, with one of them getting punched repeatedly by a cop?

Palo Alto, CA:

You don’t say? This is a perfect example of why police should not investigate themselves. Of course they won’t find flaw with their own. Investigations like that should always come from an outside agency.

So nice that their lawyers have such a clear understanding of discriminatory, and, they, of harassing.

Are they going to have to provide evidence that the phrase ‘we must love each other and support each other’ is harrassmant?

Do they feel that way when they go to church and listen about that rabble-rousing Jesus?
