Conversion Batting Average

Joe Proselytizer steps up to the plate… Oh! A swing and a miss…

I’ve been a lurker here for a while. I’ve seen plenty of “conversion trolling” and the firestorms that usually follow… My question is: has anyone ever actually been converted by reading this board? From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t seem likely… but then again, I haven’t been around all that long.

By “conversion”, I guess I mean from ReligionA to ReligionB, atheism to ReligionX, or ReligionX to atheism. I’ve seen several nonreligious conversions (troll to respected poster, person with single-minded agenda to respected poster) but I have yet to see anyone read a post and reply “Yes! How could I have been so blind as to believe/disbelieve ReligionX!” (or maybe something a tad less dramatic)

No offense, but that’s not the point–at least the way I see it. A place like this is much more like a Millsian debate. Maybe someday (not immediately) someone will be changed. However, the point of discussing these things is to further understanding. Hopefully, this can be accomplished here.

No offense taken. I didn’t mean it in a “What’s the point of this board if no one ever changes their view” sort of way. If I felt that way, I wouldn’t read it…
I understand that this board is all about debate. I was just curious if the people who come here looking to convert someone ever do.

For example: has a Fundamentalist looking to “save” people ever actually gotten someone to change their religion?

Or has a fundie ever, when faced with the fact vs. faith debate, “backslid” into atheism?
FoG seemed a little rattled there at the end of his quest.

And what if you take a swing at somebody’s religion, but they don’t convert and you get put out – but, in the process of doing so, one of your religious teammates scores an RBI. Does that count against your batting average?

prosser:

For you, perhaps. For me.

But I defy anyone to show me that drive-by witnesses, even those who stick around for a while, come here to learn anything but what not to say in witnessing to people who value ctitical thinking.

In fact, if the game is soul-saving, wouldn’t a sacrifice be even better than a hit?

“That woulda been a base hit if that atheist hadn’t thrown me a slider on the outside corner.”

So how does the umpire inspecting the ball and throwing a new one into play relate to evangelism?
