Cookie problem.

Having trouble with cookies the SDMB leaves on my computer.

The problem is the list of “new subscribed threads” isn’t working properly. It shows new posts in my subscribed threads. After I’ve read them and refresh the list, it still keeps showing them as having new posts.

So, I delete my cookies, and then it works. But a few days later, the same problem comes back. This has happened several times in a row over the last few weeks.

I’ve not noticed any problem with any other website or message board.

Anyone else having problems? Could the SDMB be sending out corrupt cookies?

It’s not a huge problem, but it is a recurring annoyance.

I suppose it’s possible that we could be setting bad cookies, but as far as I am aware, we haven’t changed anything even remotely related to that recently. Do you have any type of cookie cleaner installed on your system, or anything that might prevent cookies from getting set properly?

What OS, browser, etc. are you using?

No cookie cleaner as far as I know. I suppose it might be part of my Antivirus. I’m Using Avast Free.

I’m using Firefox Portable on Windows 10.

This happens to me too. And it’s been happening for a LONG time. (Both on Android and desktop)

It usually works itself out though. Never bothered to delete cookies.

Same here on my iPad. Happened this morning. I went to User CP expecting new posts on a dozen or more threads, but found “no new posts”. Before today it happened a few days prior. Before that it had been months.

Funny. This just happened to me yesterday on my android phone using the mobile version in Chrome. Threads were telling me there were unread messages, but when I clicked on (touched on?) the threads there was nothing new.

I have for years basically closed my browser (FireFox) and cleared cookies as a result every couple days. The SDMB isn’t the only site IMHO using mega-cookies but doing so seems to keep everything pretty much on keel for me.

I have alerted management to this issue. Not sure what can be done about it – we’ve lived with some version of this problem for years, not sure if it’s now an expanding problem or what exactly – but I did pass on your concerns.

Thanks for that.

Just for clarification, does this mean that the dope is known to send out bad cookies sometimes?

Did you change something? It appears to be working now.

Haven’t heard a final diagnosis from management but we did have an outage/down for unscheduled maintenance thing last week, that might have had something to do with it.

If it’s working now, that means something good has happened, I guess.

Thanks.

I’m another who has had persistent minor annoyances with the cookies from this site. Not something I would have complained about, but I’ll add my data point since the question came up. I use Chrome and Safari on my Mac, Firefox on my Android, and Chrome on a Windows machine. I haven’t noticed the browsers acting differently (except that the Mac version of Chrome has a good ad filter – I switched to Safari when i was given a membership) bit I wouldn’t swear to it.

Are you still having cookie problems?

And when you update your bookmarks, you may find the page layout has suddenly changed. Here’s that discussion, and solution.

Still happening to me, but it’s always done that. I close my browser, and when I reopen it, several subscribed threads appear to have new messages. I just read down until I get to a repeat, then I hit Mark All Forums Read, which clears it until next time.

For a while it has been working intermittently. Sometimes it works just fine. Then it has the same problem for a time, then it goes back to working.
