I don’t know if I’ve been completely whooshed or what, but dude, I don’t think you should name it The Spitfire Grill, both for the unsavory spit connotation, and because of the movie of the same name, which is about a restaurant called The Spitfire Grill.
One, you could get sued, and two, I wouldn’t eat somewhere that was named after a restaurant in a movie unless it was the restuarant in the movie.
I like Fire and Ice, Vulcan’s Grill, and Fifty-Six.
How about the Seismic Cafe?
Or the Penelope Cafe, for the end of the Odyssey?
Or you could name it after your wife.
I hope you serve chicken. My favorite restaurant name comes from the one that Jethro Bodine opened up: The Happy Gizzard
I wouldn’t give it a generic name based on the location: those restaurants are invariably forgettable. Ideally you’d like tourists to remember you from year to year, and even to recommend you to their friends. If your name is evocative, they’re much likelier to remember it.
So I wouldn’t name it the Bistro or anything like that; I also wouldn’t name it in Inuit (because nobody will be able to remember the name then unless they speak Inuit). Names that draw on nature are great; names that draw on mythology are still pretty good. Fire and Ice is my favorite suggestion so far, although if you do that, make sure you’ve got some dishes to back up the name: something spicy, something frosty.

HEY! He could call it the Jethro Bodine.
Well First of all I would like to thank everyone who took the time to post here. You all have been a great help. I would love to reply to each post but I am a bit buzy to do that at this time.
Every name was great and I will probally incorerate many of them from menu items.
And do not forget 50% off for Dopers that happen to make it up here. I will ask a question only a Doper would know so that it does not get abused.
I have taken many votes and the winner by a landslide is** “Spit-Fire Grille”
** For fun I will tell you what is behind the name.
Yes it is mentioned that it is the name of a movie but most people I have talked to dont realize it or only recall it after I have mentioned it. And the movie is 10 years old. I also have a slightly different spelling and it is hypenated.
It is also a car
An Aircraft
I was called a “Spit-fire” for my first several years up here due to my energy level and attitude.
It does have some reference to the active volcano that is in plane view.
The spit itself is full of campers and driving along at night you can usully see around 10 or so “spit fires” going at any one time during the summer months.
Yea any name with spit in it for a restaurant sounds a little strange to people not living or visiting here. I fully understand that. The thing is if you are standing on the spit and spending most of your vacation on it the name loses most if not all of the unappealing meaning and you become fond of the place and name quickly.
I close tomorrow and still have some time to change my mind but I am liking it.
Thanks again. This was a lot of fun.
Well, that leads to an interesting discussion - what exactly would this question BE?
(For the third item on your menu, you should have an Opal Special or something.
)
Good choice fifty-six, I hope that the Spit-Fire Grille has many long and prosperous years and many satisifed customers ahead!
Just ask the Dopers to name a moderator or where Coldfire lives or something.
