Mexico is out, QF is Argentina - Ecuador (I would’ve prefered Mexico, Ecuado can be though in defense, Mexico is constitutionally obligated to lose against Argentina in any official football match).
The other QF is Canada-Venezuela, it could be an interesting game.
Mexico had to win and looked uninspired for the first half I saw. I don’t see the US beating Uruguay, though they are ranked higher and stranger things have happened. (Ask Portugal).
Canada has much improved their passing and has a decent goalie in Crépeau. That won’t matter unless they can get some goals. They absolutely can. It just isn’t always their forté.
While the FIFA rankings are pretty useless, Canada (#48) is ranked above Venezuela (#54). Should be an evenly matched game. Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia are much better teams though.
Venezuela’s performance in the last few Qualifying games for 2026 and this Copa America is really really surprising, traditionally they always were the worst team in South America, proverbially more interested in Baseball than in Football.
They’ve really hit their stride, otherwise I would rate Canada to comfortably win over them, as things are it’s anybody’s match.
It looks like Uruguay is presenting their best possible team for the match, there were some who believed they were going to substitute and rest their best players since they are in the next round already, but evidently they don’t now why Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa got his nickname.
Very chippy game so far. The referee has blown a few calls of small importance. Since Panama won, the pressure is on the US. They have had some shots on net, at least.
Panama hasn’t won yet. Everyone should assume they will, but dropping points is a possibility.
Yeah, Panama is up 1-0 at halftime. I said they won since Fox Sports showed tables showing Panama had six points, which was premature.
The commentators on Fox Sports don’t seem very insightful. They are not seeing obvious offsides and complain constantly about the referee, who has missed a few simple things.
Missed the first half, but damn some intensity to start the second half for the US.
Bolivia scores! There’s hope for the U.S.
Didn’t last long.
eta - should come back
eta x2 - what??
Uruguay scores, which holds up on video review. It did look offside to me on replay. But it wasn’t a perfect angle and it was pretty close.
Panama back on top, so the US would need to win outright.
Another Panama goal, I think it’s over.
The additional Panama goal doesn’t matter so much as the US would have to win anyway and would still go through with a 2 goal Panama win. Reduced the chance of Bolivia tying again, which would mean the US only needs a draw, but that’s really a corner case.
bigsoccer is going through their usual histrionics. While it’s ugly for the US not to make it out of a group they really should make it out of, at home, I think other than Weah’s boneheaded red card, the product on the field was basically fine.
I don’t disagree, but Berhalter getting fired seems inevitable at this point.
I would bet very very heavily that he doesn’t/
I’d say their overall performance in the groups stage was below par. They were okay against Bolivia, winning 2-0, but Bolivia is not a good team. Uruguay beat Bolivia 5-0, and Panama won 3-1. Against Uruguay, the US couldn’t generate any significant offense – xG of 0.56 in a match they had to win – and only completed 72% of their passes. I think rehiring Berhalter was an uninspired choice, and they should move on.
The four group winners in Copa America have argentinian coaches, we try to be humble but it’s hard…
Doesn’t that just mean , even if Argentina wins it all, Argentina has the largest number of losing coaches in the quarter finals of any nation ?
I thought Colombia outplayed Brazil tonight. This will help them, as beating Panama is probably easier than winning against Uruguay.
