This may have been one of those “Too Good to Be True” rumors but I heard of some sororities doing a “Virgin Hunt”, they’d find the nerdiest/most pathetic guy they could, have sex with him and pretend they were an item and give them a phone number, and the phone number went to a phone with a recorder and the guys would basically spill their hearts on the phone to them and the women would listen and laugh about it afterwards.
I’ve seen TV shows reference this as well but I’m curious if something like that was ever as common as “Pig Roasts”.
Everyone likes freedom of speech but it’s not an absolute. And in fact absolute freedom is not ideal. There are things you can’t do or say in public without being punished for by the government. That is reality. This university has an image to uphold and they make it their business to protect that image. It is very easy to understand.
Yeah. A guy would probably get suspicious long before he got to the point of “spilling his heart out”. Most men know exactly what their “market value” is if someone out if their leagues display sudden an unexpected interest, that’s a red flag set to alarm bells lighted by flashing neon signs saying “WTF”.
Depictions of that game predate that show quite a bit. There was the 1991 film Dogfight for example. It takes place in the early 60s. It was called a dogfight rather than hogging. I’d heard of it when I was in college in the 80s but never a first hand account.
I wasn’t in a frat but I think that frats have to agree to certain rules of conduct in order to be allowed to operate by a school. If they violate them, they should get suspended or be put on probation or lose their charter. It’s not like they can’t form their own club that isn’t an official Cornel frat. Then they can do any shitty behavior that they want.
Key word “most”. The same team which had this jewel included his roommate/admiring wingman (our team lead!), another guy who broke Mach the first time he encountered a jinetera, one who didn’t move so fast but made it clear he wasn’t interested and a fifth who couldn’t believe #4 and me when we explained what jineteras are but eventually believed the local Greek chorus (a whore agrees price in advance; a jinetera expects presents after).
This thing about often being the only woman in the room has some interesting sociological moments.
Of course it is also possible to have the guy “spilling his heart out” be someone who’s stealing from romcoms by the handful.
I’ve definitely had that experience. Out of the blue some young attractive woman suddenly decide she wants to hang out with be at the bar. Uh huh. Couldn’t be she saw me tipping and whatnot and decided she wanted some of my cash. Has to be I’m a mid 40’s guy with a potbelly. She was totally in to me.
However, if he somehow made it past the initial WTF and managed to actually get the sex, and not be directly humiliated by the girl afterwards, then I could see him calling and saying some personal things to try to convince her she’s special to him and she should call him back.
defamation, threats, fraudulent misrepresentations, etc. yes, the government can muzzle you in those cases.
sure, if you’re using their resources and platforms. They can absolutely censor what you say through them. YouTube can delete any videos and remove any accounts they want. and if it’s an entity which employs you, they can take disciplinary action against you if you say something they don’t like using their resources. and they almost always will if you appear to be speaking on behalf of the company.
and of course, there’s the possibility of getting your face re-arranged by someone who doesn’t like what you say. they’ll of course be subject to criminal charges, but it doesn’t un-re-arrange your face.
I don’t know why you think “freedom from consequences” is so “cliche.”
Cornell has a code of conduct that these guys seem to have violated. You agree to follow the code of conduct when you enroll. Don’t want to follow it, go to a different school. Violate the code of conduct, and Cornell gets to decide what the consequences are.
Colleges and universities have been monitoring the activities of fraternities and sororities since they started. That’s the purpose of the charter and the Panhellenic Council. As a person, you can stand on the corner and say all the things that these guys are saying. When you represent a University or a fraternity, you run the risk that both will withdraw their support of you because they want it clear you do not speak for them. That’s why the charter is created in the first place: to set standards in behavior and academics that must be met and maintained in order to receive recognition, funds, living and meeting space, and the all important tax exempt status.
It’s not a nanny state; it’s a legal issue. You’ve broken the charter and left the university and national chapter open to rebuke and possible legal action. And they’re going to cut you loose and throw you to the wolves. It only seems fair. Cornell has already acted. Bet Zeta Beta Tau follow suit.
As for all the remarks about how the heavy-set women probably don’t mind because at least they got laid? Well, that’s probably for the pit, but I keep hearing the late not-so-great Clayton Williams advising women to lean back and enjoy it if they’re raped. Seriously. Sex for the sake of sex isn’t that hard to find even if you are overweight. There’s this stereotype of overweight women being blubbering emotional ninnies who are immensely grateful for all attention. Willing to watch purses and be the slave to the Purdy People as long as we can bask in their shadow and reflective glow (is that even possible?). Stop. It’s as much a movie cliché as the rest of the Scooby Doo gang, ok?
Frat should lose university sanction. If they’re legal adults they can do what they want, but it’s pretty gross and disrespectful to be so open about it. There’s no word on whether any of the women felt OK with it, probably didn’t get past the idea stage.
FWIW I have a very large female friend who gets laid whenever she wants. She did tell me one time “You need to have a very high tolerance for bullshit” which I don’t.
I’m assuming you are kidding, but because it actually is a prevalent attitude, it is not female-kind’s job to take responsibility for the actions of male-kind and make sure men behave. That is the job of society as a whole (after the responsibility of the misbehaving groups or individuals), and you can’t shift that responsibility over to women. Why should a sorority act if the college doesn’t?
