Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

The Herpes family of viruses (and you thought your family was weird) is known for this. See “Recrudescence”.

Also, this.

Why wouldn’t that be in the story though? All the story says is that they were retested. If they fell ill again, that would be the lead, not the testing.

Looks like some sense is breaking out:

Kentucky will be taking down license plates of people attending Easter services in groups and asking them to quarantine for 14 days afterward.

A bunch of rich people discover that “travel restrictions” and “quarantine” apply to them, too

Today in Austria:

[ul]
[li] For the first time in history, the foreign ministry has issued a travel warning for the USA. The warning is classified as Level 6, the most severe on the ministry’s six-point scale. Austrians are now advised against travelling to the USA for any purpose, and those already there are “urgently” requested to return home at the earliest possible opportunity.[/li][li] In light of the statistical study reported yesterday on the true number of infections, the government is reassessing its plan to gradually lift the lockdown. The chancellor has already warned that they may need to hold off on reopening schools, which was something they had been thinking of doing in mid-May.[/li][li] The health minister announced today that the country will be carrying out tests for all residents and workers in care homes.[/li][li] The chancellor has written an open letter to the people of Austria. In it, he notes that Austria has endured the pandemic much better than most other countries, and attributes this success to its population’s commitment to social distancing measures. He warns, however, that the problem has not yet been neutralized, and that until an effective treatment or vaccine is developed, Austrians must continue to adapt their behaviour.[/li][li] Austrian Airlines has indicated that it won’t make it through the crisis without financial assistance. However, getting aid from the Austrian government is complicated by the fact that, since 2009, Austrian Airlines has been a subsidiary of Lufthansa, a German carrier. Austria’s chancellor has made it clear that Austria will not be injecting any cash into Lufthansa without assurances that the money will be used to benefit its Austrian operations and employees.[/li][li] Home and garden stores are set to reopen on Tuesday. Hospitals are bracing themselves for a spike in accident and emergency visits for renovation-related injuries.[/li][li] Current statistics: 13,802 confirmed infections, 337 deaths, 6604 recovered.[/li][/ul]

And someone there still doesn’t get the seriousness of the issue.

No, Senator Paul; they are not being quarantined for being Christian. They’ll be quarantined for putting themselves and others at risk of catching and spreading a deadly disease during a pandemic.

I don’t recall him whining about the Jews not being able to meet together for Pesach this year.

I wonder how much the pilots were fined. Too bad their stunt did not result in the suspension/cancelation of their pilot licenses and confiscation of the aircraft upon return to the origin airport. I wonder, too, what reception the Ukrainian nation got when he arrived in Berlin.

From that link:

Hmmmm.

How long should people quarantine to be sure it’s safe?

14 days is the standard pretty much everywhere.

About two weeks longer than needed.

I meant, how long should the stay at home order last. I think someone said until there’s a vaccine.

Out of the US State of Georgia, we have this threepeat of scumminess:

Another business hurt - movie theaters.

AMC Theaters, a huge 630 theater chain based here in Kansas City, is filing for bankruptcy.Actually there business had been in trouble before this and this put them under.

Governor Cuomo has said New York State has reached its peak a little earlier and at a much lower level than the worst-case scenario. He says this is a result of all the social distancing working.

Wonderful news. We can now all start saying we overreacted.

1,780,315 confirmed infections
108,828 dead
404,031 recovered

In the US:

532,879 confirmed infections
20,577 dead
30,453 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

I first posted numbers on 11 February, so here are the numbers from one month and two months ago:

On 11 February the numbers for the US were so low I hadn’t started posting them yet; for example (and as a reminder), there were zero deaths in the US due to Covid-19 at that time.

Astute observers may notice that roughly ⅓ of all Covid-19 deaths taking place lately are occurring in the United States.

ETA: And oh yeah: the US is now the world leader in deaths by Covid-19.

We will see. More-reputable sources are now reporting the idea that the Chinese lied low about their numbers all to heck. First there were rumors on conspiracy sites, but now the reports are more mainstream.
It would be hard to imagine the Russians and the Iranians are providing good numbers.

History will tell.

Well, we dont really have good numbers for China, but why does India have only like 300 deaths? I mean, they are packed in there pretty densely, they have like five times the Population in 1/3 the space, so 15 times more crowded.

This may explain it- no testing:

*Despite swift and early moves to restrict air travel, the central government’s main problem is the quality and scarcity of testing. Without the data from that testing, Indian health officials are being forced to make life-or-death decisions without reliable information about who does and who doesn’t carry Covid-19.

“We’ve been proactive, but blindfolded,” Shamika Ravi, a health policy expert at the Brookings Institution in India, told me.

That would be a challenge for any country, but for India it’s particularly devastating. Public health care in the country is poor. Private health care is expensive. About a quarter of the population is illiterate and thus may not be as aware of the danger. And a massive citizenry makes social distancing nearly impossible — a big issue when around 100 million people in the country are over the age of 60.*…

“We expect 55 percent of the Indian people will get Covid-19 infection: 300 to 500 million cases over the next four months,” Dr. SP Kalantri, the medical superintendent of the Kasturba Hospital in central India, told me before Modi announced the lockdown. “If the current disease trajectory is anything to go by, we expect 1 million or 2 million deaths in India over a one-year period.”

So, thus it is likely that India may be much higher than the official stats show. They have only tested 3 person per million, USA is 41- which is also a low number as just about the rest of the world is higher.

another article:

Will it, though? While I agree that the numbers are suspect, I’m not confident we’ll ever learn the true ones. I think our numbers are an undercount too, and it’s probably already too late to correctly count some of the untested dead.

I’ve been seeing reports that in Texas, at least, deaths attributed to “pneumonia” are double for February and March of this year, than for all of 2016. I’d bet that a fair number of those pneumonia deaths were a result of COVID-19 infection.

The Kansas Supreme Court sided with the governor in her dispute over whether she had the authority to bar gatherings of more than ten people, including church services. They find she does, and in-person Easter services are supposed to be suspended.
