Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Nauru is the most obese country in the world, while the US ranks number 12.

Don’t worry, they’re get there.

Which is a very sad statement to make.

Fortunately, about half the reason is that the US daily death counts have been on a steady decline, after accounting for the weekend effect, that is. But the US’s number of new cases actually went up those three days, yet Brazil still had more.

Say WHAT?!?

"A group of monkeys in India swiped blood samples from coronavirus patients from a local medical college, stoking fears they could further the virus’ spread in nearby regions, Reuters reported on Friday. Before they fled the scene, the monkeys attacked a health worker, according to authorities cited by the outlet.
The incident occurred this week at Meerut Medical College in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The troop of monkeys attacked a laboratory technician who was walking across the campus holding the blood samples before taking the samples for themselves, according to Reuters.
“Monkeys grabbed and fled with the blood samples of four COVID-19 patients who are undergoing treatment,” Dr. S. K. Garg, a top official at the college, told the outlet. “We had to take their blood samples again,” he said. "

Yep, you posted that first.

Well, in this thread, at least.

The issue may be diabetes, not obesity per se.

Look at the crowding in the slums in the photo way down the page here. But people can’t just sit at home or they’ll starve, so they go out, and the virus spreads. Crowding is more likely the cause than overweight.

Today in Austria:

[li] The customer capacity limit for shops (no more than one customer per ten square metres of floor space) was scrapped today. The same limit was also lifted for museums.[/li][li] As of Wednesday, it will no longer be required to wear face coverings in schools. Physical education classes will resume on 15 June. High school graduation parties will be allowed.[/li][li] Starting in June, visiting people in hospital will be permitted once again.[/li][li] The government has withdrawn its standing call for civilian service volunteers to help with the pandemic.[/li][li] Current statistics: 16,685 confirmed infections, 668 deaths, 15,520 recovered. The number of active infections has fallen below 500, of which 98 are in hospital, including 23 in intensive care.[/li][/ul]

Yesterday was the 48th day with no domestic transmissions. The last local infection was on April 12. The new based are returning Taiwanese from overseas or the sailors.

Taijuan is opening up more and more. More and more restrictions are being lifted. Other than the quarantine after returning from overseas, it doesn’t seem like there’s that many restrictions left.

Sigh. The US is in for a long haul. I’m jealous of those of you who live in places that have beaten this back.

From what I understand, obesity by itself is a factor in getting severe illness and death. It doesn’t matter if you have diabetes or hypertension or some other condition that’s commonly associated with obesity. cite

The obesity is a factor in the severity of the illness; crowding is a factor in how much it spreads.

Down to only active 8 cases (2 serious) in whole country here in Slovenia. Current restrictions similar to Austrian ones. Officially, emergency ends as tomorrow. So wearing mask and social distancing guides expected to generally lessen from mandatory to recommended in the next week.

And I see that when I wrote that, I missed the elephant in the room. The top antibody test on the list, the one with 100% success rate, got the 100% for 88 people tested >= 14 days after symptoms. So it’s not validated for people who are asymptomatic

Yes, but if many thousands more are contracting it due to overcrowding, then many more will die of it, whether or not they’re obese or diabetic or hypertensive.

For some reason, these additional Moscow deaths haven’t shown up in the Worldometer counts. I recall that when China reported a big addition to deaths in Wuhan that they added those. Did they just miss the news?

I don’t follow the Johns Hopkins site. Did they add the Moscow deaths?

6,160,295 total cases
371,006 dead
2,738,284 recovered

In the US:

1,816,820 total cases
105,557 dead
535,238 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

Hawaii had three days in a row this week without a new case, then suddenly three new ones a day for three days in a row, all on Oahu. But barbers opened on Oahu yesterday, and I got my first haircut in 2-1/2 months today, although my regular shop is still not open.
