Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Thanks for the explanations. My question is actually “What happens to A?” That is, yes, lots of cases of B relative to cases of A, but that’s not replacing A. Does A die out? Or is the researcher who used the term “replaces” incorrect?

Yesterday’s record new cases in the U.S. is no longer the record: as I write this it is now 52,944 for today.

From what I heard on CNN tonight (and read elsewhere, but can’t remember where), the new stain wouldn’t affect vaccine development, because it’s still similar enough to the original. So, yeah, if you caught new B, then you would be immune to A (to the extent that we know so far about immunity). B spreads more easily to people, A runs out of victims.

My brother is a physician, and he was saying that viruses tend to attenuate and become less deadly. He explained it like this: All a virus wants to do is replicate. The one that would be able to do that most effectively would be one that causes none to minimal symptoms, so that the victim is out and about spreading it. If a virus kills before infecting too many people, then its less likely to be passed on than one that doesn’t kill the host. If a virus makes someone to stick to go out, it won’t spread as readily as one that doesn’t.

It’s winning! We’re going to win so much that you’ll be tired of winning!

Are you tired of winning yet? Just wait until you top 60,000 cases per day.

That’ll prolly be tomorrow.

Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are now mandating masks in public establishments thru Labor Day…unless it’s against your religious beliefs. So I guess the QAnon Plandemic types have an out. Sheesh, it’s bad here.

Chicago to Order Quarantine of People Arriving from High-COVID States

10,986,162 total cases
524,098 dead
6,140,952 recovered

In the US:

2,837,189 total cases
131,485 dead
1,191,091 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

Over 208,000 new cases worldwide today; over 57,000 new cases in the US alone.

You’re right, ‘replacing’ isn’t quite the right word. At a gross level, the proportion of Strain A in the population continues to decline but in some areas A might continue to flourish because B doesn’t succeed or work its magic quite as well.

Also, in broad hand-wavy terms, the closer B is to A, the better the antibodies generated by exposure to A should work on B. I’ve not followed it systematically but I think the jury is out on how well Coronavirus antibodies work over time. That’s a very depressing thought in itself.

In two days, the US has had more COVID-19 cases (109 336) than Canada has had during the entire pandemic.

Canada: 104 772 cases total as of 7pm EDT Thursday July 2nd.

In two days Florida alone has had 3,736 more cases than Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, Vermont, West Virginia, Maine and North Dakota combined have had since the beginning of the pandemic.

I just saw that Chicago news. Here’s the list of “must quarrantine when coming to Chi-town”:
"The order takes effect on Monday, July 6, for travelers from the following states:
-Alabama
-Arkansas
-Arizona
-California
-Florida
-Georgia
-Idaho

-Louisiana
-Mississippi
-North Carolina
-Nevada
-South Carolina
-Tennessee
-Texas
-Utah

I just got an emergency alert on my phone that failing to wear a mask in Texas will be punishable by a $250 fine. Greg Abbott has seriously gotten religion.

Will this apply to the Republican State Convention due to take place in Houston in a couple of weeks?

They are having a high school coaching convention. Sports seem to have constant outbreaks . . .so let’s bring together all the coaches to spread it amongst themselves, so they ccx an take it back to their teams!

11,191,810 total cases
529,127 dead
6,330,816 recovered

In the US:

2,890,588 total cases
132,101 dead
1,235,488 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

I expect US new cases to continue ramping up and expect the US death toll to start getting uncomfortably high around 10 July.

I actually think it will take a little while longer. Like about the end of July…to give all the BBQ parties time to get really sick.

“At least 12 counties in Texas announced they will not be enforcing a statewide face mask mandate declared Thursday by Governor Greg Abbott. Meanwhile, public health officials in Texas reported 7,555 new positive cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the state’s total to 183,532.”

Hey ho
Way to go
Te-hex-as

You don’t think 132,101 is already uncomfortably high?

thorny – hasn’t been comfortable for a while now – locust

Whatever you do don’t divide Covid deaths by 9/11 deaths and wonder why people aren’t outraged.

CMC

Sorry; I was unclear. I was talking about per day deaths.

I think that at the moment there are far too many Americans who are far too willing to think that the current few hundred is an acceptable number of deaths per day. I think that may change when it is 1,200 or 2,000 or more per day.
