And if COVID deaths are being undercounted, as the studies indicate, the rate is even higher. And the immediate death rate is only one count – there are the COVID health problems, which will cause ‘early’ deaths for many people, but won’t be counted as COVID deaths.
That’s a very raw case fatality rate. Coupled with how much this varies by age, blankly stating there’s a rough fatality rate of 1.9% is quite improper.
Mass (voluntary) testing of the entire population (some 9 million people) began last week. Everyone is encouraged to attend a local testing centre for a free test. I assume everything is going well as I haven’t heard any complaints.
The rate of new infections is finally improving (down to 3000 per day from 9000+ a few weeks ago).
The strict nationwide lockdown imposed three weeks ago is being relaxed today. Museums, most retail shops, and some services (hairdressers, etc.) are permitted to reopen, with the usual provisos about wearing masks and keeping distance. Restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues remain closed until at least early January. This includes the city’s famous Christmas markets, which are effectively cancelled this year.
Tomorrow is a public holiday (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception), but in what must be an unprecedented move in the history of the country, the government is allowing retail shops to open anyway for Christmas shopping.
States which achieved a new highest daily COVID reported cases (seven day average) over the weekend.
That is, since Friday, December 4.
Alaska
Vermont
New Hampshire
Maine
Massachusetts
New York – exceeding the previous high set in April
Oregon

Indiana
Ohio
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
Delaware
Maryland
Virginia
West Virginia

Twenty Seven states plus DC. And in most cases the new high is very significantly higher than it was earlier in the year. In many cases it’s skyrocketing up.
I’m surprised at New York. For a long time they managed to avoid exceeding the number seen back in April, but you could see that a new high was only a matter of time.
Massachusetts exceeded its previous high a month ago, but this new surge has prompted closings this weekend of in-school education in cities like Cambridge and Framingham. It’s back to Virtual Learning.
You’re conflating case fatality rate (CFR) with infection fatality rate (IFR). CFR considers only confirmed infections. IFR incorporates all infections. If the question is “What is the fatality rate of this disease?” IFR is what we should look at.
My post above from earlier today indicated that West Virginia is among the 26 states reporting new weekly high daily reported cases 9seven day average), but that single details doesn’t give a picture of what’s going on in the state.
There is much in the local FL news in the last couple of days about how various media investigations are turning up real evidence of widespread suppression of the statistical reality in FL.
FL isn’t showing up at near top of the COVID-19 case data not because it’s healthier, but because the state-level government is doing more to hide reality than react to reality.
