Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Apparently, you also have to worry about jiggling the Pfizer vaccine too much as well. Thank god there’s alternatives.

Initial order was for 100 million, same as Pfizer (so enough for 50 million inoculations at 2/person). Just a few days ago the Trump administration actually did something right and secured another 100 million to be delivered by June 21.

It looks like we previously ordered 100m and just contacted for a second 100m. The first 20m can be delivered soon, the last 100m “second quarter”, and i missed when the 80m will arrive.

Remember it takes 2 doses per person, so that’s enough for 100m people total.

I guess i ain’t getting any of that, either. I’m kinda low in line.

I heard on the radio today that some people who got the vaccination were getting false positives for HIV. Anybody know anything about this?

Australian vaccine still being tested.

73,809,725 total cases
1,641,741 dead
51,819,551 recovered

In the US:

17,143,779 total cases
311,068 dead
10,007,853 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

States reporting highest-ever COVID case reports yesterday (Dec 16, 2020) (seven-day averaged)

Maine
Delaware
Tennessee
West Virginia

Only four. That’s encouraging.

It does make you lose sight of the fact that these are the highest new case numbers ever for these states. I think that not a week has gone by in which at least one state did not report a new record high. I’ll be happy when this number goes down to zero. That would mean that, although new cases were being reported, they weren’t at record levels.

The over-18 population of the US is about 209 million. About 20% said they won’t get the vaccine, last I saw, so that leaves about 167 million. I believe I read that Pfizer at least is approved for over 16, but close enough. So, it’s getting pretty close to enough for everyone who will want it. Assuming Astrazeneca’s vaccine is approved soon, I presume we’ll have enough secured and on the way.

…there hasn’t been much Covid-19 breaking news from New Zealand lately because literally nothing has happened. We get a few cases at the border every week. But no new outbreaks, no border failures.

But we have new news today. The government have secured enough vaccine to not only vaccinate every New Zealander for free, but also (if the governments agree) all of our pacific partners, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands (part of the realm of NZ) as well as Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu. Roll out to begin in the second quarter of 2021.

I didn’t used to dislike needles but every time I get blood drawn and they can’t find a vein the first two times I start to dislike them more and more. I wonder if the vaccines will be easier to find a spot to administer. I don’t mind an initial larger pain and slight soreness afterward, but I don’t look forward to being repeatedly stabbed by someone only trained the month previous.

The vaccine doesn’t need a vein, just into the muscle is fine. One stab per shot will be all they need for you.

For intramuscular vaccines the preferred adult sites are the upper outer arm deltoid, the buttocks or the upper leg. Clearly the quickest is the arm deltoid as is doesn’t require disrobing or privacy screening. Vein access, as for lab draws or IVs, is contraindicated, as well as being much harder to do well or fast without lots of training and experience.

IMs, if done adequately, should barely be more than a poke. Marginally more twinge than a subcutaneous, but not much. Make an effort to not look at it being done, don’t tense up the muscle, shrug your arm, let it hang loose and dangle it, it will hurt the least that way.

This is me. I have no problem getting shots, I have no problem seeing a needle by itself. But if I see a needle go into my arm, I’m likely waking up on the floor.

I’m the opposite way, when I’m getting blood drawn I have to look to reassure myself that they’ve finally found a vein. The actual feel of the needle, though, is pretty unnatural and something I’d like in me as brief as possible.

Be sure to let the nurse or medic know that when you sit down. That is usually enough to make sure it won’t happen. Makes it easier on all of us. We respect those who tell us, it is just a fact about you, not a minus value. I’m a nurse who has done thousands of vaccinations and shots yet for dental novacaine I always ask my dentist to be sure I don’t see the needle (even though by definition I am already sitting down).

AKA vasovagal syncope. Not related to anaphylaxis even a bit.

From the AP’s Latest CoronaVirus News article that is just updated continuously:

…and…

Lol, sure. 5 day shelf life, dont jiggle it too much and mix with saline before injection. I’m sure rounding up the half empty vials is gonna really make a difference.
