Okay with me. Do we all get the same amount? Or will some get more than others?
Of course. We’re going to go middle out alphabetical order so people with a last name starting with M will get the most money and those with an A or Z last name the least. Since I have a M last name I suggest an order of magnitude drop each time and once we drop below 1 cent it goes negative and starts to climb. How about we start with a million dollars to each M?
Huzzah!
Some trivial points, but not sure they have been made.

Hand sanitizers are convenient and do an adequate job if they exceed 60% alcohol. But they are NOT better than soap and water using appropriate hand washing procedure - which sounds obvious but is the object of a couple hours study during a surgical rotation. Surgeons are very serious about sterile hands.

GI symptoms are not a prominent feature of coronavirus. People are stocking up on bathroom tissue since people on the news are stocking up, and it is easy to store. I am not a family of six. A big package would last awhile here. If you have a month’s supply, and I usually do, this is more than enough methinks.

Are places selling out of bleach? Because that would probably work better than wipes.

Our city is closing casinos, day cares, schools, March break programs, sports, etc. There is talk of closing malls and more. Essentially, no one wants to be blamed if things get worse. “An overabundance of caution”… “ is a small price to pay since nothing is more important than health”. Although I agree with the second part, and sometimes with the first, I worry about precedent more than short-term economic effects, having seen several pandemic fears. At least folks are pulling together and taking this reasonably well. For now.

Some think this will hurt Trump. This has been said before about other things. Republicans are repeatedly more likely to minimize the issue, or see it as a plot to harm Trump. I hate it when health issues become partisan.
169,605 confirmed infections
6,518 dead
77,776 recovered
In the US:
3,777 confirmed infections
69 dead
73 recovered
You forgot to mention 89,204,501 resurrections.
Okay, I’ll admit this is trollish, buy I’ve gotten into so many arguments with people online who deny how serious this is that I’m just gonna start responding to them with “You don’t have to act brave. It’s okay to be scared. We all are” and see how many heads I can make explode.
This is pretty much what is happening in Austria. The federal government last week passed a law for a €4 billion aid package to allow businesses to continue paying their operating costs, including wages and salaries for employees who must stay home. Individual states are supplementing this—Vienna, for example, has added an additional €35 million to the pot to help local businesses. AIUI the money is already available via online application. Applications from small businesses are specifically solicited.
In addition to the above, the chancellor announced last week that all working parents who cannot arrange for child care are entitled to a special three-week leave of absence from work at 1/3 pay. (Not 2/3 as I previously wrote—that was a typo.)
It might surprise some that a high BMI is associated with poor outcomes in severe respiratory disease. But there are several reasons, including tendencies for decreased lung volume, increased work of breathing, less diaphragm movement, more breathlessness with less exertion, increased oxygen demand, increased chance of comorbid disease, intubation difficulties, positioning difficulties, increased aspiration pneumonia risk and decreased chest wall compliance - to name a few.
ECMO isn’t everything. A long ER wait for an ICU bed is common in Canada. The paucity of staffed ICU beds is a bigger issue.
Do you remember this thread from the distant past, a time we were all young and naive. It’s interesting that the thread was started only six weeks ago.
I think that most of people outside of Asia (any many within Asia) never suspected that it could get this bad. I wasn’t nearly as worried about it as my Taiwanese friends, and it winds up that they had lived through SARS, which was much worse in Taiwan than in Japan, which was fortunate to not be affected.
Iceland has case rate around 500 per million – close to the same situation as Italy. Looks like a bad time to be in Iceland.
My kids school has canceled all out-of-school activities. Disappointing for the kids – some of these are things the kids have been looking forward to for the last year – and looks pointless to me. They are more at danger all in a group somewhere else than they are all in the larger group at school?
REI closing for 2 weeks. MGM closing their casinos. No word from Bally on theirs
Yup. I was overly optimistic. I wrote:
I’m now self-isolating in my bedroom, although i probably just have a cold. And I’m using those face masks when i briefly venture into the rest of the house.
puzzlegal, I’d say you were quite prescient! Nice try with the humblebragging.
Thx
Taiwan has done very well to contain the outbreak to a level much lower than other countries. Today it’s up to 67.
There were six new cases yesterday and eight today. ALL of these were Taiwanese coming back from overseas and most were assholes who decided the super cheap prices for tours were too good to pass up.
One person in particular lied to his company to take time off, saying he was taking a vacation domestically. All the employees in his company are being quarantined so he has naturally been fired.
A high school student developed COVID after going with his family on vacation to Greece.
Taiwan is working hard at tracking all the people that the patience have had contact with and closely monitoring their health. The high school student presents a problem because he wasn’t diagnosed for an entire week after he returned and may have been in contact with a large number of people. All the students in his class (likely in the 30s) are under home quarantined.
All students and teachers in Taiwan have now been prohibited from traveling to other countries. I presume there may be exceptions made for emergencies.
Coronavirus: Man in Japan tests positive again after recovering from illness
NOT good news. This means that contracting the illness does not confer immunity.
Is this the first town in the US to go on full lockdown?
North Haven, Maine has banned non-residents.
Wow, an island. Great idea, think they’ll keep the island free of the virus? Hawaii and the UK have no terrestrial rabies virus.
Los Angeles is now officially on lockdown- theaters closed, no dine-in at restaurants, bars and clubs closed, gyms and fitness centers closed, bowling alleys.
I wonder what the effect on other cities in LA county is going to be. The South Bay is a mosaic of small towns, each with its own local government, but when the big dog barks, the little dogs usually fall in line.
