Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

I assume those are feverish patients w/o beds. Not, I hope, corpses?

The very rich don’t go to hospitals for medical care. They get in-home care. And for surgery, they fund their own hospital wing.

But globally speaking, most doctors and nurses aren’t very rich, and aren’t employed by the very rich, and don’t care for the very rich any more than you do. Rich people who don’t have their own doctors and nurses are just going to have to go to the same hospitals as the rest of us, and get the same care as the rest of us.

Only a few people in the administrative area will know that when the patient dies, the hospital has been left money in the will …

Inslee issues stay-at-home order for two weeks except for thousands of ‘essential’ workers

Good grief, Dick Pound has been a member of the IOC for almost 40 years. He’s very outspoken, and has been at the forefront of drug testing athletes for decades. So he’s been in the news many times. Why do people giggle like it’s the first time they’ve heard it?

I could not name a member of the IOC if my life depended on it.

That presser was the worst of them all, and that’s saying something because yesterday’s was terrible. It left me more afraid than I’ve ever been in my life.

381,649 confirmed infections
16,558 dead
102,429

In the US:

46,145 confirmed infections
582 dead
295 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

Worldwide infections will pass 500,000 no later than Thursday.

Italy is still racking up a lot of new confirmed infections so the US prolly won’t catch them for a few days yet. The US is still on track to pass China’s 81,000 confirmed infections by Friday, tho.

New York state, with 23,230 confirmed infections, has something like 6% of all confirmed infections worldwide and a little over 50% of all confirmed infections in the US.

That fucking sucks. I’m sorry. I hope we get past this quickly.

From this day forward, you can.

Dick Pound! Dick Pound! Dick P-- hold up, never say it three times.

Italy just had a two day streak of new cases going down, and deaths going down at the same time. This is the first time this has happened since the start of the epidemic.

Still horrendous there, of course

Canada has almost 2100 cases and 24 deaths. Every province or territory has been affected with the exception of Nunavut.

Canada has largely completed its biggest repatriation effort since a world war. With borders closing worldwide and a government ask, one million Canucks returned home this week. Given that, the case number could be worse. Officially, almost 50% of cases are community transmission but clearly the real number is far higher (including undiagnosed cases).

Ontario and Quebec have ordered all non-essential businesses closed tomorrow.

Hospitals are all running low on masks and PPE. Government says supplies are coming. What happens in the ICUs next week will determine whether Canada’s relatively early lockdown worked. Enormous financial commitments have been offered. Although too early to judge, Trudeau and Ford (Ontario’s premier) have stopped the usual sniping and, for a change, seem decisive and even competent.

Canada now has 56 or 58 testing centres running. Again, tests are limited but conditions were slightly relaxed. I’m not over concerned about the increase in cases given more testing and returning citizens. But the deaths are slowly climbing, and a big increase would be worrisome.

In fact, New York state now has more confirmed infections than all but 5 countries (and the US is one of those five).

How much of that is in NYC?

Dr. Fauci was

  1. Telling the facts
  2. People believe him
  3. He was getting more attention than Trump

Therefore, he had to go lest he diminish the gilded aura of The Orange One.

Fauci is off the air unless the news services start interviewing him on their own. Trump really does care more about money and his image than other peoples’ lives.

On the video version they were moving and coughing so yes, alive.

Wisconsin joins the other Great Lakes states by entering a form of lockdown today. We are not to leave our homes except for essential activities, plus nuclear-family-scale recreation (I’ll be taking a long bike ride with my kid this afternoon; it’s the one day this weeks that is neither cold nor rainy).

Some good news from Norway:

In the last 24 hours, 8 757 tests were performed up from 6 858 in the period before. This has confirmed 196 new cases, down from 240 in the previous 24 hours.

While there are almost certainly a very large number of unconfirmed cases out there, the fact that increased number of tests now yield a decreased number of new infections may indicate that the social distancing strategy is working. I hope its a trend rather than a blip.

The situation in Spain is even more grim than this: Spain has started using at least one ice rink to store bodies and is using converted hotels as hospitals.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (-R) says US should get ‘back to work’

I think you mean “ventilator” not respirator.

A respirator is just like a face mask so a person cannot get or transmit germs. A ventilator is what you would be on in a hospital.
