Great points. Imo, tourism and business travel will be vital to get SF back on its feet. Lets all hope. wish and pray for the best for all of us.
It’s entirely unclear to me whether any New York hospitals are actually “hoarding” equipment, as opposed to having on hand less than they expect to need themselves within the next couple of weeks. Cuomo said that there “may be” hundreds of extra ventilators scattered around the state, but he doesn’t appear to actually know; and of course that might be one or two ventilators per hospital that aren’t in use at the moment, but are very likely to be needed shortly.
It makes a whole lot of sense for Cuomo to have the survey done and find out who’s got what – this should really have been done earlier, though Cuomo’s got a lot on his plate at the moment and that omission may not be his fault. And it may make sense to have the National Guard help move stuff around. But accusing upstate hospitals of “hoarding equipment”, especially when apparently nobody knows whether any of them actually are, doesn’t seem to me to make any sense at all.
1,098,762 confirmed infections
59,172 dead
228,923 recovered
In the US:
277,467 confirmed infections
7,402 dead
12,283 recovered
Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:
We’ve passed the 1,000 deaths per day mark in the US now and have the third highest death toll of any nation.
I found out about this shortly before it started. At 10:00 a.m., 4 April 2020, the People’s Republic of China government ordered three minutes of silence in honor of those who have died from COVID-19. The observation included everyone silenced, but to sound air raid sirens, ship horns, car horns, and train whistles for those three minutes.
Here is a video concerning the observation.
At the 6’ 20" mark, you’ll see on a stage the following written in Chinese: Deeply Mourn the Sacrifice of Martyrs and Deceased Compatriots.
The announcement I got before the event from my district’s official WeChat account included the following poem:
*有些战斗
听不到炮火,却听得见冲锋 有些战场
看不到硝烟,却看得见牺牲
冬去春归
我们得以再次拥抱暖阳
然而一些人却没能穿过黑暗 永远留在了冬天
他们是
用生命守护家园的英雄和烈士 他们是
不幸被病毒感染的同胞和亲人
这些离去的背影
终将成为我们接力前行的力量*
Which Baidu Translate (Baidu’s translation was more poetic in English than Google’s) tells me is:
*Some battles
I can’t hear the gunfire, but I can hear the charge. There are some battlefields
No smoke, but sacrifice
Winter goes to spring
We can embrace the warm sun again
But some people can’t get through the darkness and stay in winter forever
They are
The heroes and martyrs who guard their homes with their lives are
Unfortunately infected compatriots and relatives
The back of these departures
Will eventually become the power of our relay*
About that National Stockpile… The AP is reporting that some states have received masks with dry rot, broken ventilators, and unusable latex gloves.
ETA: Oh, and thanks to another diligent Doper we have this:
Yesterday, the United States suffered 1,321 corona deaths. In way of comparison:
An average day in America: 7,000 deaths, all causes
An average day in America 1,733 deaths from heart disease
France yesterday 1,355
Spain yesterday 961
Italy yesterday 766
My running list.
My apologies. I shouldn’t have posted that in this thread.
Dr. Vladimir Zelenko says @16 mins , governments of USA, Israel, Russia Ukraine are in touch with him government of Israel is implementing his treatment protocol(hydroxychloroquine Azithromycin zinc) nationwide
He has seen 911 cases of covid19 in his hospital, 350 serious/potentially serious ones where he recommended his regimen and just three intubations out of that and zero deaths… In normal case scenario he says there would have been 18-35(5-10%) deaths
Government of Ukraine called him for advice, he advises them to use hcq for all the people over 60 years age in Ukraine and the use of army for distribution of pills.
In other news, Government of India orders 10 crore (100 million) pills
No it isn’t.
You want us to listen to some crackpot conspiracy theorist interview a doctor who has made many claims about a coronavirus treatment without actually backing it up with evidence? He hasn’t even offered any proof that they had the virus when they were treated.
He says he tested patients and 75% of those tested came out positive, and then he ran out of test kits and then based on similar symptoms he diagnosed without testing. And he lives in a closed community, area of one square mile with 35000 people so there is very large possibility that those patients presenting similar symptoms would be having the same highly contiguous disease.
The BBC is reporting a couple of cel phone towers have been attacked by people thinking the disease is spread by the new 5G network.
You cannot make this stuff up.
The LA Times says car crashes are down by half. You will notice that the car insurance companies are being real quiet about this.
Naw, I work for a company that sells a lot of auto insurance. Premium is down, too, as many of our customers are out of work. And like many large insurers, we can’t cancel policies right now in some states, and have chosen not to do so in others. We also sell lines other than auto, and there are potentially some very large losses headed our way.
I work for an insurance company. We talked about it internally. We have a UI product where there will be a lot of claims. Disability unclear. Life may not be that much of an issue due to our product. We have Gap insurance and yes, that will offset some of the others due to reduced driving.
What do you expect them to say? It’ll probably be in the trades, do you expect a press conference?
What do you want them to say? We love coronaviruses?!
Here is a discussion of OPPLAN 3551, military assistance to civil authorities in an mess like this. On this page is also a link to a discussion of military assistance to the Postal Service, which has the nicer name of GRAPHIC HAND, if memory serves.
He says. Again, he says. Not he verifies, he says. He also says that Trump is saving this nation from a disaster, which is a big fat fucking lie. Trump says “Anybody that needs a test, gets a test. We—they’re there. They have the tests. And the tests are beautiful.”, but that’s a big fat fucking lie. Jim Bakker says his Silver Solution will cure coronavirus, but that’s a big fat fucking lie. Dän Lee Dimke claims that sticking a blower dryer in your face will kill the coronavirus, but that’s a big fat fucking lie. You want me to believe in your coronavirus miracle cure, show me actual, peer reviewed, scientific evidence. Until then, stop pushing people into buying up all of the medications that have been proven useful for people with other diseases, such as lupus.
That’s 35000 nails for Dr. Hammer.
Can someone explain why Urban Redneck’s post is so silly? I think that gowns, gloves, and masks that could be tossed into an autoclave or other sanitizer would be a huge game changer right now that we should have been working on. Good for the environment, too.
U.S. is over 300,000 total cases:
