Cosmetic smells (shampoo, lotion, etc.)

I hope this topic hasn’t been covered before, but this is a GQ and Mini Rant.

Okay, purchased new shampoo and conditioner today for my newly colored hair. I decided that the product manufacturer may be the closest to helping keep my color even if the claims are not true. My shampoo smells like bubble gum.

I like to use a lot of different lotions but I find most lotions contain fragrances that conflict with my scent of choice.

OKAY, why must cosmetic manufacturers inject so much scent in things that one can’t determine or focus on the scent they want? Even deodorant manufacturers put scents in their products that conflict with my scents of choice…

I usually end up buying a more expensive lotion that has no smell with little more benefit than another and end up with a shampoo that makes my hair smell like fruit or something that came out of the dryer.

This drives me nuts…

I have three different scents I like to wear, none of which are designer but have a fragrance all their own. Only to be mixed with other scents that these manufacturers force on you.

  1. Shampoo
  2. Conditioner
  3. Face Cream
  4. Body Lotion
  5. Deodorant
  6. Makeup (even if I use little it still stinks)
  7. Fabric softener (there is a difference in softness, 'specially on towels)

I must be weird but I prefer to stick with one scent…my favorite is “Stress Release” from Bath and Body Works.

What’s worse is when you’re a guy and you smell like flowers… I mean. All the good products were designed for women, so they all smell kinda feminine… the name Aveda comes to mind.

``All of your dreams will come true. All of my dreams came true, but now… I have a bunch of other dreams.’’ – Sonic Youth.

And reading the label helps not. Manufacturers describe the scents of their products with meaningless words like:

•New- even fresher scent (fresher that what? what did it smell like before?)
•Mountain scent (what does a mountain smell like?)
•Spring meadow
•Autumn scent (the smell of decomposing leaves?)
•Powder fresh scent (Gunpowder, baking powder? cocoa powder?)
•Crisp linen scent (Your product smells like my laundry?)
•Country scent (Which country- Rwanda? Chad? Esst Timor?)
•Outdoor fresh (Ugh- there’s a bus going by just now)
•Garden scent (mmmmm… love that newly fertilized topsoil!)

And the ever popular:

•Regular scent

Aveda feminine? I love the scents in Aveda products, and use some of their pure-fumes as cologne. Nice, spicy unisex scents, I think.

As for “powder fresh” scent, they always mean baby powder, but my question is, what is the scent of baby powder? Is that some flower? They all smell the same, taking after J&J.

On any given day, I smell like whatever Pert Plus smells like, whatever Lever 2000 Clean Rain smells like, whatever Degree “Sport” smells like (something like Old Spice, I think, but from the name I would have guessed a nasty locker room or something), and whatever Bounce Outdoor Fresh fabric softener sheets smell like.
