Do scented deodorants and deodorant soaps make any sense to you?

I’ve always picked the unscented. But those are only about 20% of the items on the supermarket shelf, so I guess most people like scents.

Do you also buy an unscented when you want to wear cologne?

Do you buy different deodorants to use to go to work or to a ball game?

I only buy unscented anti-perspirants. I’m very sensitive to scents and most perfumes give me a slight rash. One of the last places I want to be seen scrathing is my armpits.

As for soaps, I like minty-scented soaps these days. I usually buy Origins’ Salt Suds and Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint.

I don’t understand the scented thing at all. We buy everything including laundry detergent unscented. Mix all the smells together: deodorant, soap, shampoo (can’t find this unscented) laundry detergent, fabric softener, hair styling stuff and then top it off by dowsing youself in perfume or cologne you end up smelling like?? Why do people do this?

And I so do not get room deodorizers. If you want your house to smell nice get some flowers or plants or bake a loaf of frozen bread or cookies.

The only thing I buy scented is anti-perpirant. And for a totally lame reason. I can never remember if I put it on and it’s easy to tell with the scented stuff. I have this huge phobia about forgetting anti-perpirant (I don’t have a sweat problem but I do drive a car without air conditioning in Texas) and find being able to take surreptitious sniff of my armpit to verify the application of anti-perspirant immensely comforting.

This probably isn’t why most people buy scented stuff tho’…

I thought I was alone in the world because of all the scents out there. I use unscented deo and also try to get very mildly-scented body wash and shampoo. If I buy strongly-scented body wash I’ll usually buy that and use it in lieu of perfume, because it’s strong enough.

I’ve never used perfume much because my mom is allergic to a lot of different kinds, especially the ones that are really popular. Some give her asthma attacks. Besides, I figure if I smell a bit like body wash (the one I use is very lightly scented) and shampoo (again, not strong) then who’s going to complain? I’m clean. I’m groomed. I admit to having a liking for baby powder-scented deodorant, but I couldn’t say why. It’s not like everybody knows what sort of deodorant I have on, so I’m probably not liable to set off anybody’s allergies. Nor am I likely to make them simply want to run after smelling me walk into a room!

I like minty-smelling soaps and shampoos, but I can’t use them or I get ITCHY. That’s too bad, because I adore the smell of mint.

I prefer unscented products all the way. I was looking at all the different “flavors” in the cleaning products aisle and it was overwhelming!! My bodywash has a light scent, but I think it pretty much rinses off. Same with my shampoo. But my deodorant is unscented. On the rare occasions when I decide to wear cologne, I don’t need it overpowered by other stuff.

My daughter loves the fruity scented hair and body products. Sometimes she comes out of her room smelling like a fruit salad. It’s a bit much.

I hate scented stuff. Less is more. Then they took old fashioned Right Guard stick off the market and guess what? No such thing as unscented deodorant in any of the local stores. They make unscented antiperspirants, but not regular deodorants.

Dear Pointy Hair Deodorant Bosses: Did you ever think that people who don’t like scent are also sensitive to anti-perspirant crap???

I’m a male that will smell like 3 week old gym socks even right after i take a bath so i have to have scented stuff other wise the smell seems just to hang on me …

The laundry is just as bad …

deodorants largely are just masking scents. Anti-perspirants stop you from sweating but deodorant and deodorant soap depend on the scents to cover the smells of sweat, etc. When a deodorant or d-soap dries it leaves a scented film on the skin that is reactivated when moistened, covering any scents. Deodorant soaps can be irritating to peoples skin exactly because of the film that is left behind.

I don’t mind scented laundry detergent, but in general I was taught, as a guy in particular, to pick one scent and stick with it. So if you have a favorite cologne, then that’s the only scent you should have on your body.

My WAG is everyone around you gets a slight subconscious sense of security by your always having an easily and reliably identifiable scent.

[hijack]Has anybody ALSO wondered that why products that all have the SAME active ingredient (aluminium zyrconium tetrachlorohydrex-gly I think) WORK differently?

I’m going through the mad hell of finding another anti-perspirant as Degree, the only reliable one that’s worked for me, turns the pits of my shirts into cementaceous yellow patches.

Currently testing Rightguard sport extreme white-invisible solid. It’s not doing very well, but I’ve got this WHOLE STICK left that I just can’t throw out. :frowning:

I saw an ad recently for sparkly deoderant. It had glitter in it.

I buy scented stuff. To me, “Rain Fresh” deodorant has a clean smell, but you can’t really smell it unless you were to stick your nose in someone’s armpit. As far as body wash and shampoo, I don’t see how that could smell terribly strong since you rinse it off. Any residual smell just smells clean. I also pick a body wash that goes well with my perfume. Even with all the scented stuff, I don’t think I can be smelled unless someone is close to me.

I have no idea if the anti-perspirant I use is scented or not. It’s got a definite smell to it but it’s more of a clean smell than anything in particular. I typically go with similarly smelling shampoos too although I do admit to liking some scented soaps, especially Yardley of London’s Almond and Oatmeal scrub. That stuff is awesome.

Well I finally got to try the scented deodorant, essentially by accident.
The only brands on sale for my last trip to the store were scented.

I had to decide, did I want to pay extra for unscented?
No, I’m too great a tightwad for that, so I caved.

The good thing is that “Avalanche” scent doesn’t really linger once it dries. (I hope- maybe my nose just becomes immune to it)

When my daughter was in her prepubescent stage, she was very into fruit scented body products. She would emerge from her room in a visual cloud of scent. Riding in the car after her shower was almost unbearable–all the windows would have to be rolled down, which naturally defeated the purpose of all the Strawberry scented hair gel smeared through her hair. I’m very grateful she’s outgrown that stage…

I, on the other hand, hate, absolutely hate, the taste of anything mint, which unfortunatley includes toothpaste. Crest came out with orange and cinnomen flavored, but unfortunately, Crest breaks out my mouth something horrible (even my lips swell after I brush me teeth, which wouldn’t be bad, except that they also have a red ring around them, which resembles a herpes outbreak gone wild). I would love to have an unflavored toothpaste…
