Has anyone seen the impossibly cute and romantic video for Cosmo Jarvis’ “Gay Pirates”? The song has been getting some buzz after Stephen Fry tweeted about it. Cosmo Jarvis also has a good interviewabout the song and video on AfterElton.
He seems to have never even heard of Barry Burgs scholarly book Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition, written over 27 years ago.
(Vastly summarized book: the majority of the pirates of the golden age had gay sex with each other, and considered it just a normal part of pirate life.)
I don’t think Cosmo was going for historical accuracy, but was trying to create a song about love despite adversity. If it really bugs you, you could interpret the lyrics as the captain having an unrequited thing for Sebastian, and harassing them because of that. I do love that the lovers get a triumphant ending.
