Could a 24 hour " Adult Swim " style network 'make it' ?

I am sure that Adult Swim hits it’s target audience well.

I am sure that most Dopers at least know what AS is.

Can the format expand into 24 hours? A seperate channel as well as a seperate network from Cartoon Network?

If so, what programming would be on the network, and why?
5 or so shows should suffice, so that all can share.

1.Assume for this discussion that all program rights and clearances can be bought and obtained. (Viacom, Turner, and Comcast(G4) might not agree, but we can hope)

2.As this is a ‘new’ Network, current AS Favorites have to be listed and justified as well as the newcomers.

3.Debate and Discuss

  1. Robot Chicken – this Show (for me) defines a comeplete and total WTF?! that this new network would need.

  2. Wonder Showzen This would be a natural ‘also ran’ to Robot Chicken. Not as good as, but still as WTF, in live action form.

3.South Park – This show is South Park. Need I say more?

  1. Drawn Together – More WTF and hits the target audience well with jokes.

  2. X Play. This show has gone from video game reviews, to a brand of humor all its own. It still at the end of the day relates back to video games, and therefore, it hits the target audience well.

Adult Swim is supposed to be all about animation aimed at older audiences. On the surface, that could work as a whole network by itself, but if you expand it out to shows that are weird for the sake of being weird, I’m not sure it could.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is great at 1 AM when you’re tired and there’s nothing else on. It’s 15 minutes. WTF did I just see? It’s done. That doesn’t work as well at 4 in the afternoon.

If they could find enough shows like Family Guy, Futurama and South Park to fill out the daytime hours, then they’d have something. But I’m having trouble coming up with any shows beyond those that would fit the AS style.

While I’d love to see it (and wouldn’t mind the squirreliness of ATHF in it’s prime at 4 PM), I’m afraid they’d just screw it up, and instead of getting more shows like Robot Chicken, etc., we’d have to suffer with endless hours of Tom Goes to the Mayor crap, instead.

Apparently you are all missing out on the glory, the wonder, that is Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil. I DVR it, and it’s the first thing I watch every Monday morning. I like that and Squidbillies. The animation is really unique. I’m getting bored with the “lousy animation for eternal adolescence” meme on AS, but then, I’m far from their target demo. I know Squidbillies is lousy animation, but it’s a unique and stylish lousy, if that makes any sense.

Hmmm…they don’t have enough shows, imho, and they have a few that I would never, ever watch. Someone on their staff likes the stupid.

On the other hand, they’ve made some wise choices - I like Futurama, The Venture Brother’s, Robot Chicken, South Park (I thought this was only on comedy central, but I would happily watch it on Adult Swim) and Family Guy (in that order). But nothing else is anything remotely what I’m going to watch.

Maybe they could round out this channel with more Anime series? At night they could add in cool stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo and at the 3:00 p.m. after school slot they could put in some teenage stuff like romances (Fruits Baskets) or comedies (Ouran Host Club, maybe Slayer’s even though it’s ‘older’) or more action packed stuff (Naruto, Prince of Tennis etc…)

But then, I like anime so I’m biased (but I like American animation too!)

“Adult Swim” is great, but I don’t think it could make it 24/7. I just don’t think there are enough people getting baked at 9AM to put up with “Tom Goes to the Mayor”?

Then again, stoners often lose the remote, so the TV in most target households might just be stuck on the channel perpetually.

If they went 24/7, they’d just end up with a lot more anime. which is not something I’m interested in.

Some shows that they should get, however:

  1. Undergrads, and also, pay to make more.
  2. Clone High. See above.
  3. The Critic. Possibly see above, but it’d be harder getting all the original people back to work on it, since it’s been canceled for so much longer.
  4. The Tick. No need to make more, just re run all the old episodes (I of course refer to the cartoon, not the God-awful live-action attempt.)

I dunno, are Jon Lovitz and Park Overall really getting that much work?

I echo the fear that a significant expansion of AS would result in hour after endless tedious hour of the big-eyed, big-mouthed irritation that is anime. If they got stuff like the Marvel superhero library (the old 60s stuff to present) I’d probably be in front of it constantly.

Now that I think about it, adding Daria and replaying Mission Hill (Adult Swim used to show it but not anymore) would be great.

Hell, throw Beavis and Butthead in there.

EDIT:

And 90s Batman and Batman Beyond. And Transformers and MASK and GI Joe.

I agree there isn’t enough marijuana being grown in the world to justify a 24/7 adult swim, but if we are destroying the legacy of Nancy Reagan, I recommend some of the following:

Rocky and Bullwinkle (the original stoner cartoon)
Robotech
Voltron
Ducktales- one of the most sophisticated cartoons ever.

and does it have to be animated? Quirky could be the standard. IF so:

  • Arrested Development
  • Scrubs
  • My Name is Earl
  • Seinfeld
  • Mr. Show w/ Bob and David (mildly edited, I guess)

Only if they include B&B watching videos as that was the best part of the show.
What was that animated show with the duck voiced by Jason Alexander? That would work, I think.

Maybe they could tap into the old British cartoon market, and start showing Danger Mouse, Duckula, and Bananaman. Danger Mouse was damn surreal enough at times to satisfy the biggest 'head.

Duckman.
