Could Chris Hemsworth be the next Brad Pitt?

I’ve only seen Chris Hemsworth portraying Thor in the first Thor movie and then in The Avengers, and I’ve seen a couple trailers for Thor 2. And watching the Thor 2 trailer, I was struck by how much he resembles Brad Pitt (i.e. the best-looking man in Hollywood, YMMV).

Now, I’m a comic book geek, but I never got into the Thor comics. But I’ve watched pretty much all of the superhero movies from the last decade (I think the only ones I’ve missed have been the Hulk movies and the last Batman movie), and out of all of them, I found Hemsworth as Thor to the the most likeable superhero out of all the movies. And I’ve been impressed with the way he portrays the character. Like, this is a guy I’d like to hang out with.

Those of you who have seen Hemsworth in other roles: what do you think of his acting chops? Brad Pitt is a damn good actor. How’s Hemsworth in other roles?

Could he be Jennifer Aniston’s next husband? Okay, just kidding about that one.

I liked him quite a bit in Cabin in the Woods. I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything other than that and the Thor stuff.

He is the best thing in Snow White and the Huntsman but that’s not saying much.

He does seem like a genuinely nice guy, though. Here’s one from a series of ads he does here in his native Australia.

Pitt’s strength is that he’s not just a pretty face. He’s shown he can do real acting.

I like Hemsworth but he hasn’t had a chance yet to show what his range is as an actor.

We’ll see how he does in Heart of the Sea, looks like that will be more stretching.

I like him a lot, he was also good in his brief bit in the Star Trek movie.

I also appreciated his work in the Star Trek movie. I remember thinking at the time that I wouldn’t have minded him having the Kirk role. He’s enjoyable as Thor, particularly in the Avengers movie.

This is why I love Chris Hemsworth.

He always looks like he needs to be bathed to me.

I mean, I hear he’s a nice guy and all. But he looks like maybe he kinda smells.

ETA - wow, I have never in my entire life, I think, read something as stupidly written as that article. I am blown away by its idiocy. (I mean, cute pictures, but did you read it?)

Too soon to tell - he needs to play a range of roles, but so far I’ve found him very believable in the various roles he has taken, and he has a lot of screen charisma. I remember when I saw “Star Trek” that I thought I would rather have seen a movie with the crew of the Kelvin rather than the Enterprise.

I forget who I’m stealing this observation from, but an astute observer once said that if Brad Pitt weren’t so handsome, he’d probably be known as a great character actor (think of his small but memorably hilarious role in True Romance, or his turns in Thelma and Louise, 12 Monkeys and*** Kalifornia***) . And he might actually be happier that way.

As it is, because he’s so handsome, he ends up in a lot of not-very-interesting leading man roles in not-very-interesting mainstream movies.

He’s definitely a step up from Sam Worthington.

Too soon to tell about his range, but I do find him very charismatic.

As Jim Belushi said to Rob Lowe in About Last Night:

ETA: My wife would be very happy indeed if I were to wake up some morning looking exactly like Chris Hemsworth.

Could? Yes.

Will? Extremely unlikely.

Must’ve been blinded by the d’awwww.

(Actually, I was just looking for the cutest and most recent pictures of Chris holding little India that I could find. And after all, one mustn’t expect too much of Britain’s Daily Mail. )

Okay, I saw that too. I’d forgotten about that role, probably because it was so brief.

+1

The muscular man can hold a baby and a water bottle! His petite wife couldn’t do that I bet. They’re wearing t-shirts and walking along the Venice boardwalk, so it seems they might be out for a walk. When I turn seven next week, I’m going to invite all my friends over and we’ll watch Thor and eat cake.

I bet his wife, who’s in charge of this baby thing since her daddy is busy trying to fill up that college fund, can’t even LIFT that baby!

When was that?

He did get nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for Moneyball, and I thought the nomination was deserved.

He does get some generic “handsome leading man” roles, but looking quickly at IMDB, some examples of movies where I enjoyed his acting were Se7en, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club, Snatch, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds, Megamind, and Moneyball. YMMV.

I found the Thor movie to be rather weak, and the same for his role in Avengers (second weakest, after Hawkeye - I find Jeremy Renner to be equally if not more bland).

Brad Pitt is definitely a better actor.
