Could constant AVG pop-ups be a sign of a virus

Every few days it seems I get a popup in my lower right corner saying ‘update your AVG’. I don’t recall this in the past. I use the X in the corner to close the message, then manually open my AVG to update it.

I have heard some viruses do things like this to change your antivirus so it will not detect infections. Is this a real thing? If so and I have a virus, what can I do?

It’s hard to say – maybe? AVG itself is pretty damned annoying with its popups, even with a fresh installation of Windows. If I were you I’d uninstall it altogether and switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, which has far fewer popups to begin with.

Or check if you had turned off auto-update?

I think that AVG does this whenever they have an upgrade, rather than an update. Updates seem to happen without any intervention on my part, but every year they try to sell me the enhanced paid-for version.

Update it via the popup and carefully check that you tick the free version.

I don’t think it a high level of inconvenience for this excellent free program.

Are you sure it’s asking you to update AVG, or is it saying your computer has important updates that you need to install? Mine nags me daily about updating, and when I click the popup it’s warning me about Firefox, which I no longer use.
