I’m an academic and my job depends on publications, so I write articles and the odd book chapter, but I hate it. I love research, I really like teaching, and writing is the price I have to pay to continue to do those things for a living. But if the word came down from on high that I wouldn’t be judged on publications, I’d stop writing immediately and spend more time in the field.
I could, yes, and I’ve been praised many times (even here on the Dope) for my prose. But, like so many others on here, I am plagued with doubt about readership and lacking in self discipline for the work.
My first novel came out in 1986; my second in 2005 or so. I’ve finished nine others, and have started (and put aside) about five more. In addition, I’ve sold over 50 short stories (had another sale just yesterday).
If you’re willing to pay $5,000 or more you can get your book publish , my sister publish a kid book this way . She didn’t made a profit on the book and the publishers had to been laughing all the way to the bank !
I wrote a novel once. It took three drafts and about ten months. Nobody was interested in buying it because, let’s face it, it was pretty niche subject matter to begin with. I did get good reviews from a SME though. Anyway, I could probably pretty it up in a fourth draft and try again, but I just lost interest over time.
I have written or cowritten three books. The first was cowritten between about 1980 and 1984 and published at the end of 1984. The second, with the same coauthor, between 1986 and 1989. The third, I started writing in 1990. I taught a course based on it around 1995. Answering a couple questions asked by a student resulted in my rethinking the subject entirely and I tore up most of what I had done and finally published it in 2002. All three advanced mathematics.
I’ve published four picture books, one easy reader, and I’ve e-published a children’s fantasy novel. I’ve written another children’s novel that I haven’t published yet (although I’m still trying to find an agent for it) and I have a fifth picture book coming out January, 2017. Now I’m working on another children’s novel, which I hope to send to a beta reader in a month or less.
