Couldn't be hotter ----> In the office...

This thread is based on Jarbabyj’s recent thread.

Yesterday was hot here in Kentucky, today will be hotter… the humidity is visible in the air and at any moment the weather guy warns that the air may just burst into water. Pray for me - the rain forest encroaches.

Without air conditioning I’m a sweaty heap - luckily we have it…

My question is:

Do you work in an office without air conditioning? Do you get any work done? How do you cope?

Fortunately we have A/C, but my SO often gets repair calls for restaurants whose A/C has gone out in the kitchen. It sometimes gets over 100 degrees back there. How do they cope? They drink lots of water. That’s about all they can do.

We have AC but…

I work for an aerospace firm that repairs aircraft widgits. So we have hugh compressors and power supplies, and other heavy power hungry stuff. We’re one of those businesses that was basically told to cut back our consupmtion or face HUMOUNGUS power bills, we’re in California. I’ve seen our power bills, I don’t want to know what Humoungus ones look like.

Any hoo, we now track our consuption, and alocate power. AC is low on the priority board, and is first to go when we need to test something. So I’ll have days when it’s 70 degrees one moment, and nearly a 100 an hour later. :: grumble, grumble, Friggin metal roof, grumble::

Yeah, I’ve got a/c in my office. And it’s mine, all mine. Ahem. I mean, yes. Somehow, somewhere I created some good karma and have my own office with its own a/c.

Now, I don’t have it at home…shew, it’s hot!

Well, I’ve got A/C in the office, but I have to ride a shuttle onto the grounds from the security office (we’re on airport property and it’s an FAA thing, I guess) and those shuttle can get hot. Especially in a suit and tie.

I’ve got A/C in both of my apartments and since the one down here is a corporate lease-type-thing and I don’t have to pay the bills, I’ve got it set nice and low (think 60’s, low 70’s.) Sometimes I even have to put socks on because my feet get cold.

When I worked at General Motors, I got to sit in an air-conditioned office. However, every once in a while (and in order to get to and from the office), I’d have to go down onto the manufacturing floor. In addition to no A/C and hot welding guns, you weren’t permitted to have arms and legs uncovered because of the sparks from the welds. So it wasn’t uncommon to be wandering around in long pants, long sleeves, in a huge enclosure that was 100 degrees or more. Fortunately, I worked nights, so it wasn’t too bad. Plus, as I mentioned, I spent most of my time in the A/C.

These days, I work in an office in Phoenix. Gotta have A/C here. Frequently, too much. I work in the Facilities department. Building standard is 72 degrees (which is really pretty chilly here). It’s disconcerting to go from 72 to 115.

I have a home office and until last friday I had no a/c in my office. I’ve opened my computer case had a fan blowing directly at the processer and underclocked it so in wouldn’t overheat. Me, I just have a ceiling fan.

So now everythings changed (well as soon as I put the cover back on). I love cent. a/c.
