Cover CD's that are just umm intresting

I was sufing though Real Raphosody earlier and came across a Tribute to Metallica done by Hip-Hop people but ti doesn’t say who they are. The entire cd is “intresting” to say the least.

Great version of Master Of Puppets IMHO

Soem other interesting (and sometimes good) cover CDs:

“Cutting Their Own Groove” - Big Daddy
Anything by Hayseed Dixie
The “Pickin’ On…” series of bluegrass covers

Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s do punk rock style covers of song genres like Broadway musicals, 70’s pop music, love ballads, folk songs, etc.

Dred Zeppelin did covers of Led Zeppelin songs in reggae style with an Elvis impersonator as lead vocalist.

“The Wall” done by Out of Phase. Very… er… interesting.

There’s an Australian compilation of (mostly awful) covers of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ called, imaginatively, ‘Stairways to Heaven’.

The artists mostly consist of half-arsed tribute bands like ‘The Australian Doors Show’ etc - although there are also some fun things the an operatic version and a version by the Doug Anthony All Stars

It’s… um… odd.

That should read 'some fun things like an operatic version. Sigh.

There was a CD called What if Mozart Wrote “Born to Be Wild”? that I believe inspired a series of similarly themed releases.

There’s a popular band called Lounge Against The Machine that does lounge/swing versions of popular alt-rock songs. They’re pretty good. They’re fun and their arrangments are interesting and it’s all very tongue-in-cheek. But it’s really annoying to be around drunk people who are hearing them for the first time: “Oh my god! This is that song! Can you believe this is that song? They’re doing this song! That is so funny! This is that song and they’re doing it!”

7 or 8 years ago there was an album of R&B acts doing Country songs and Country acts doing R&B songs. I don’t know anything about it, I just remember it because of a Stand-Up comic talking about how disappointed he was when he found out it was just stuff like Willie Nelson doing Ray Charles and vice versa. He didn’t consider this much of a stretch and had hoped it would be more like SaltNPeppa doing Garth Brooks and vice versa.

There was a pretty great Willie Nelson Tribute album called Twisted Willie which was all hardcore bands. Jello Biafra did a really cool version of “Still Is Still Moving to Me”.

Oh! And how could I forget: Pat Boone in a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy

And in case anyone’s interested in the CD Covers that are just umm interesting…

My all-time fave it Dynamite Hack’s redition of Boys in the Hood.

The Indigo Girls: Jesus Christ Superstar: The Resurection

There’s some fantastic covers by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, with Miss Dynamitee being an absolute classic.

Actually one of their albums is called “Lounge Against The Machine” and it’s done by Richard Cheese and his band. I think they have about 4 different albums out.

Richard Cheese samples.

You’re both right, kinda. Richard Cheese is the singer/pianist/bandleader, but the band is officially called Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine.

Rebuild the Wall by Luther Wright & The Wrongs–Pink Floyd’s The Wall done C&W/Bluegrass style.

My sons (huge Metallica fans) really enoy listening to Apocalyptica, a group of guys that play Metallica songs on cellos. It’s actually quite enjoyable.

My sister just had the DJ at her wedding play the entire Fiend Club Lounge CD, covers of Misfits songs by The Nutley Brass, as guests were entering the reception area. I thought it was wonderful. Light and bubbly. Not very often you can say that about Misfits songs.

One of my favorite CD’s is Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits - Covers of, well Saturday morning cartoons.
Some of my favorites are Underdog by The Butthole Surfers, Spider-Man by The Ramones, and Hong Kong Phooey by Sublime. A really fun CD.

One more favorite of mine is Tom Jones - Reload. Covers of songs by Tom Jones, with each one pairing him with another group or artist. My favorites on this CD - All Mine (Portishead cover) with Divine Comedy, Burning Down the House with The Cardigans, and Little Green Bag (George Baker cover) with Barenaked Ladies.

The Bobs, an acapella group, have a great album of covers - two now that I go look. Their Purple Haze is a lot of fun.

Blind Faith - a topless prepubescent ginger girl holdinding a chrome plane… whaa?

I’ve actually heard this CD. The highlight, in my book, was Rolf Harris doing it in a style akin to “Tie Me Kangaroo Down.” It starts “There’s an old Australian rock band lying dying…” substituting “rock band” for “stockman.” Hah. Good times. Laffs all round.

For those of you who like the “Boys in the Hood” by Dynamite Hack, there’s always “Gin n’ Juice” by the Gourds (very good) or “Bitches Ain’t Shit” by Ben Folds (available on iTunes, also pretty good, very emotive).

The Pat Boone heavy metal covers has become kind of an in thing to do – Paul Anka just released one which I have not heard nor do I have any intention of hearing. I believe there was a Loungeapalooza CD a few years ago; Steve and Edie did “Black Hole Sun” IIRC. Too lazy to do another Amazon search though.

The all time best cover of anything anywhere by anybody, of course, is the Ranchero/Tejano version of “Ring of Fire” (Rueda de Fuego) by Mingo Saldivar.
