Covers Better Than Originals-Christmas Version.

This should be easy, inspired by the similar thread regarding covers better than originals, what are some Christmas examples in your opinion?

I like Madonna’s version of “Santa Baby”, but it can’t top Eartha Kitt’s version! Eartha Kitt’s take on “I’m Getting Nothing for Christmas” is superior to the Shirley Temple original.

Some examples, The Carpenters did fantastic covers of Christmas songs. Love their Sleigh Ride, " No Place Like Home for the Holidays" and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. Even their “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” has a nice intro though I don’t like that Christmas song regardless of version.

Many more I will list but what are some from fellow Dopers?

Baby it’s cold outside with Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton.
Little drummer boy be Pentatonix
Straight no Chaser. Carl of the Bells and The Christmas Song

I like Madonna’s “Santa Baby,” better than Eartha Kitt’s.

“White Christmas” by the Drifters. Man, does that song GROOVE!

Dead to me…

^ Alas, a man must occasionally take one on the chin. :smack:

Well, I guess not DEAD, as such. I mean, it’s not like you even knew me in the first place, so being dead to me wouldn’t really hurt all that much, I guess.

Anyway, when Madonna sings in that Betty Boop voice about her “outer-space convertible” I kind of want to go back to 1983 and push her in front of a train. So otherwise we’re good.

Sarah McLachlan’s version of Joni Mitchell’s River.

Much as I love Thurl Ravenscroft’s “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” I think the Whirling Dervishes nailed it best.

Do You Hear What I Hear? has been covered by about 11 million people, but Martina McBride’s version is absolutely the best.

Any Christmas song that Jackie Evancho chooses to sing outshines any previous attempt.

The Twelve Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser.

Frosty The Snowman- Beach Boys and Ray Conniff versions.
Sleigh Ride- Carpenters, Air Supply, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis and the original orchestral versions.
Let It Snow- Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr.
Winter Wonderland- Eurthmics, Ray Conniff, Johnny Mathis
Rudolph- Besides Gene Autry, I like Billy Gilman’s version.
White Christmas- Bing’s version is great, also like Drifters’ cover.

All I can think of now.

I don’t know if it’s really a “cover” but I always dig Brian Setzer’s version of Jingle Bells.
