Craft Dopers: Tell me about Etsy

I’d never heard of Etsy before becoming a Doper, but I’ve ended up there a couple of times by following links from SDMB. I’m intrigued.

I make funky hand-felted brooches, and every time I wear one, people say, “That is so cool! You ought to sell them!” (Note that no one who has made that observation has ever offered to buy one! )

The one on I listed on eBay didn’t sell, but that just did not seem to the right venue for something like that. I have a day job, so I can’t produce enough to sell at an art & craft fair.

So what about Etsy? How is it similar to and different than eBay? Does your stuff sell? How many pieces do you feel like you need to have in your store to have a presence? What’s the range in the quality of work? (i.e., Are there crocheted toilet paper roll covers that look like Southern belles in hoop skirts as well as finely crafted jewelry with precious metals and genuine stones?)

Should I jump in and give it a try?

I have an Etsy store.

I’ve only had one buyer so far. But lots of visitors!

I say try it. There are many successful sellers on Etsy peddaling all kinds of stuff–some of which you couldn’t pay me to take. If they can do it, why can’t you?

Good luck!

I visit Etsy on a daily basis.

I’ve been very happy with my purchases there (2) and love the variety.
