Craig T. Nelson to reprise Heyden Fox role

Fans of the 1990-1997 ABC series, Coach, will get a chance to see the character resurface on NBC. Set in current time, Fox is now an assistant coach to his son’s Ivy League team in Pennsylvania.

I really enjoyed “Coach.” I see Jerry Van Dyke is still kicking. I wonder if he’ll make some guest appearances. Bill Fagerbakke was also great.

I loved the original series.

His son??? Hayden Fox has a daughter. Played by Clare Carey. She recently appeared on CSI.

I know they can retcon anything. But it would have been interesting to see a female coach and her dad as the assistant.

I just started watching the series on Netflix. I’d seen some of the shows before. Even though it started in 1989 it’s a very 80s show. Look at the hair, and it was an old theme of a middle age guy dealing with cultural change. But Jerry Van Dyke and Bill Fagerbakke were great character actors well suited for their roles. Comic Judy Watson also appeared often as Dauber’s giant girlfriend.

Hayden and Christine adopted a baby boy in the final season. Which would make him 18-20 now. So either it’s a retcon, or the article is wrong and the son is a player on the college team, not the head coach.

As long as he gets all the dialogue for “Incredibles 2” in the can, I don’t care what he does.

He was such a spectacularly good voice for that role.

I missed that. thank you for clearing that up.

Kelly never got involved in Sports. It would be a stretch to make her a coach now.

Last time we saw Coach he was in the pros, the Orlando Breakers and had just retired.

Good thing Peter Griffin didn’t make it quick.

Fagerbakke may be too big for TV roles like this, now that he is a Star on the big screen.

Thinking back to the original series. Christine was a very important character. She was the one person that could reason with Hayden and calm him down. Especially when he had taken a stubborn position or said something he needed to apologize for. It helped change the character and make him more likeable. Season 1 Hayden was totally different from the last Season.

Kelly could sometimes play a similar role. But she was so young that Hayden usually sought out Christine to talk things out.

I really hope they can get Shelley Fabares to return. If not they’ll have to create a new character that can reason with Hayden in a similar way. Remember how he’d blow up at the beginning of the episodes and then calm down and apologize at the end.

Shelley’s last imdb credit was Superman in the late 1990’s and 2003 in Justice League. Hard to say if she’d return to a series now.

Yes. It would have been interesting. But, if you remember the original series, Kelly was not headed in that way with her life. She had no real interest in football and she never cared very much about the team or the role of the coach or coaching staff.

So, if you want her to be a coach in modern day time, I think you might need to come up with some kind of life-altering event that would have caused her to become involved with coaching.

Alternatively, you might be able to get her to change her attitude about coaching and about football or you may have been able to change her attitude about the direction of her life. After all, when the original series ended, Kelly was pretty much wrapped up in theatre and in the entertainment industry. But, hey! making those kinds of things happen in a TV show is not all that difficult. What would you remember about the show and how would you have changed things so that she would have made some kind of choice to become a football coach?

I didn’t remember Hayden and Christine adopting a son. He’s still much too young to coach. But they’ll get it figured out.

I recall Kelly was a Liberal Arts major? She had no connection to sports at all.

Just speculating. I expect Hayden will be quite calm and comfortable in retirement. He’ll become super competitive and aggressive again when he resumes coaching. That will create family problems just like it did in the original show.

I loved this show when it first aired. One of my favorite sit-com episodes ever is the one where Coach and Giant Blond Dude both buy motorcycles against their significant other’s wishes. The shot of them lying under the house, whispering Bad To The Bone had me in tears.

I assume his son is a player, not a coach, and that Nelson is an assistant coach to that team.

Being network television and all I predict a smoking hot trophy wife, maybe with a heavy foreign accent. Colombian maybe?

My favorite is when Stewart locks him outside their hotel room while Hayden’s in the hot tub. He throws Stewart out and Kelly says “if he goes, I go.” Hayden says “Understood - get your things.”

As for the new show - has Parenthood been canceled? I thought he was on that.

Are they going to care that much about continuity?

Him being assistant coach to his son the coach is more of a sitcom premise.

Judy Watson was my favorite character. My favorite episode was the one where she won Fox’s truck. It was hilarious.

But she left the show very early. I think early in the 2nd season. I think she was probably let go because her career never took off. She didn’t leave to pursue fabulous other options. I think the people who ran the show dumped her for some reason.

Does anyone know what happened to her and why she was let go?

Christine gave birth to a son. Didn’t she? I’m pretty sure she did. I guess he would be old enough now for it all to make sense.

Parenthood just had their last episode at the end of January.
