I think we need a thread (though perhaps this should be in the Pit) for listing/discussing movie ideas which are either being bandied about or, horror of horrors, are actually in production! This can also include films which might be good, but will probably turn out to be crap. It can also include films which are most definately crap, but are such bad crap that they’re enjoyable.
The ones I know about which fit into these catagories are: JLo’s remake of Casablanca, this movie is most definately going to be crap. Tim Burton’s Willy Wonka might be good, but is probably going to be crap. Finally, the remake of the TV series V could very well be bad crap that’s enjoyable. Anybody got any others they’d like to share?
Alexander the Great starring Leo Di Caprio as the Great Macedonian himself. That’s like casting Richard Chamberlain as General Patton, quite frankly. Oh, and Baz Luhrmann is directing, so expect his trademark “edited by hyperactive monkeys on crack” directing technique.
Dawn of the Dead looks absolutely terrible. The plot looks ridiculous and the screenwriter they have is the person responsible (in the worst sense of the word) for the Scooby Doo movie.
My first thought was “oh, this is just some B movie” but then I find out that Ving Rhames is in it?
Ridley Scott was planning to do a film like this as well, but it got delayed due to the Gulf War Part II. Let’s hope that Scott get’s do to his version.
Oliver Stone is also making a movie about big Al. This one has Anthony Hopkins(in talks as Ptolemy) and Collin Farrell (as Al). This one looks promising.
The House of the Dead. Video game movies have always been a bad idea, but The House of the Dead actually has a good storyline and a lot of potential to be a great zombie movie. But, NOOOO!! This guy has to take a great horror/detective story and teenyfy it by making it about a bunch of teenagers going to a rave on an island named “Isla de los Muertos” who get attacked by super hyper jumping kung fu fighting zombies. How is it this guy DOESN’T know he’s making a piece of shit?
Troy, directed by Wolfgang Peterson (of Perfect Storm fame) and starring Brad Pitt as Achilleus. … oh man, it’s called TROY! Is ‘Iliad’ too much of a tongue twister? There’s a small consolation in Orlando Bloom (as Paris) and Sean Bean (as Odysseus) but with Brad Pitt at the helm, this isn’t going to work.
I’ve enjoyed Brad Pitt in some things – Fight Club & Se7en automatically spring to mind. But something tells me he won’t make the best Greek hero… well, the fact that he doesn’t look remotely Greek springs to mind, but beyond that!
Resident Evil 2. I know this goes into the video games shouldn’t become movies discussion, where the first one goes too. But if we look at the first one, all they had to do was adapt RE1 or RE2 from the game into the movie, and they might have had something good. It was a no-brainer. But no, they had to go in and takes pieces of this and pieces of that and remove monsters and change characters and well, it was terrible. I can’t imagine RE2 being any better, unless it directly lifts a storyline right out of one of the games.
According to IMDB, Helen’s being played by Diane Kruger… other than a couple French films, this looks like her first big acting role. I believe that this is a picture of her. Meh… I’ve always imagined Helen to be more of a darker, mysterious beauty. The rest of the cast seems predominantly British, which makes Pitt’s casting all the stranger.
Though I’m not in the majority, I’ve always enjoyed Gladiator in a guilty, indulgent way (particularly the soundtrack, since I’m a huge fan of Lisa Gerrard’s work), a film to which I draw many similiarites. But that had no legitimate source material to be corrupted, it fun pulp. But this… poor Homer. Sigh.
I’m probably alone in this, but I think that about the only actress around who could play Helen is Isabella Rossellini, but she’s a bit too old for the role.
I can’t really picture Sean Bean as Odysseus. He doesn’t have the build for it, unless he’s been working out. Orlando Bloom might work as Paris.
Brad Pitt could work as Achilles (let them used the Romanized version if they insist, it’s the one most Americans know). He’s pretty, he can be wrathful, and he can brood.
The question is, who’s Patrolcus? That relationship, as well as the Hector/Achilles duality is the center of the plot.
I can also see DiCaprio as Alexander. He’s a good actor, just often caught in bad teenybopper plots.
