Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Season 3 (open spoilers)

I kept waiting to see a thread pop up about the show, but finally searched, and discovered it’s hardly been talked about at all (here’s a link to the minimal first season discussion). If I missed a thread, please lemme know.

So anyway, are others watching? I’m finding the show to be one of the smarter things I’ve watched. This will start with spoilers through episode 6; if you want to discuss later episodes, do you mind putting the new episode’s title in bold, like this?

Through Episode 6, “Josh is Irrelevant”
The last couple of episodes have really strained my appreciation for Rebecca, and the tone’s dramatic change, I’m not totally sold on. But mostly sold. The show has generally played as hijinks, even as it recognizes how deeply inappropriate these hijinks are. On the one hand, the suicide storyline has the potential to come across as a Very Special Episode. If they hadn’t done such solid work to build up to it, I think I might be done with the show.

But they’ve spent two and a half seasons building up to this point, and it doesn’t feel at all contrived; on the contrary, it feels inevitable, as the characters (especially Rebecca) juggle more and more lies; something’s gotta fall.

The songs remain top-notch. “Let’s generalize about men” is amazing; “Movement” made me giggle like a third grader.

Are there other fans?

I was wary of where the show might be going after last season’s finale, but they’ve managed to keep Rachel sympathetic through it all and the show (one of my favorites) is as good as ever.

The songs are still a highlight. “Maybe She’s Not Such a Heinous Bitch After All” is strong stuff.

I finally binged the first two seasons of the show this summer and I’m now watching as they air. I think they’re doing a great job of handling this while still staying true to the characters and the story.
And this season’s songs are good (I loved “I Go to the Zoo” & “Strip Away My Conscience”, which had a couple of “they got away with that?!?” lines).

(I’m also going to recommend “Jane the Virgin” - it’s smarter and funnier than you would expect it to be.)

Starting to look like Greg is the lucky one, getting away when he did. The rest of the characters are likely to get dragged down with Rebecca, straining their already-improbable devotion to her.

The songs are good, though, so I’ll keep watching.

Everyone on this show is deeply unbalanced (well, not White Josh, but everyone else), which is one of the things I really like about it. Even Greg had a lot of issues going on.
