Crazy Heart: Oscar noms? Really?

I thought Bridges was quite good in the film, though I still can’t see why an otherwise bright woman like Jean (Jane?) would take up with a boozing, smoking, bloated, broke guy like Bad. Yes, I know…It happens all the time, esp. in the movies. I’ve just seen it too many times.

Other than that, I liked the film and the songs, even though I am not a big fan of C&W music.

I just saw this this weekend. I liked it a lot. And the soundtrack is great! My husband got it for me for Mother’s Day.

I agree that Gyllenhall was miscast and too young. I can understand some people wondering how she could be attracted to Bad Blake, but he definitely had his charms - at least IMO. when he wasn’t puking.

I recognized that woman he took home from the bowling alley - she was on My Name is Earl.

Really? I can’t look at her without thinking of those people from the Twilight Zone episode about plastic surgery.

Shudder.

I liked it ok–but the part about him puking from drinking–nah. Hard rollers don’t vomit.

Haven’t seen it. Not going to. Cannot stand Gyllenhall. Wish she would just go away.

Hey, I finally saw this movie. While I generally agree with most of the posts here, and don’t have much to add to that discussion, I should point out that there are about a half hour of deleted scenes on the DVD, including one long (and uncomfortable) scene where Bad actually does visit his son, and another one which shows him falling off the wagon and LITERALLY end up face down in the mud, after Maggie tells him to stay out of her life. I think it was wise to cut both of these, as they really change the tone that the film was going for.

I wish they had kept the scene where he falls off the wagon, because I do think the transition from rehab to the end was too rushed. He basically got sober because of Maggie, and her rejection must have been way more devastating than what we were shown. It would have been nice to see him fall down and then realize he had other reasons to go on.

Yes! About time somebody mentioned this. I don’t know anything about her, but my wife and I thought she was awful. She wasn’t acting so uch as she was posturing, doing almost nothing but that lazy sort-of-smiling face, with nothing behind it. When she did try to show something more, she reminded me of Diane Keaton’s mugging “ditzy” schtick.

I agree with almost all of the other criticisms of this movie. However: Best Actor for Jeff-- absolutely. IMO he’s been one of our two or three greatest living actors for a very long time now*, and a somewhat understated performance like Crazy Heart is still as good a reason as any to give him the Oscar he’s been robbed of for 35 years.

  • Sean Penn and Robert Duvall.

Interesting. I got the opposite impression- I thought their mutual comfort level was obvious (at least in MG’s case), and undercut the characters’ relationship. But I agree that she didn’t seem to be inside her character.
