I work in a very blue workplace situated in a very blue part of a very blue state, so the only contacts I have with the other side is through my in laws, who seem otherwise intelligent but whose hatred of all Democrats (except apparently for me) has drawn them far into the right wing news sphere. Epoch times is their primary news source.
We get the standard Covid was invented by the Chinese with the help of Fauci as a way of disposing of their elderly, and the Vaccines are more dangerous that the disease. But the one thing I hadn’t heard before was their telling my wife to avoid using password lockers because George Soros has the keys to all of them.
When I’m 94 years old, I hope I’m as tech-savvy as George Soros is.
Maybe if I had a few moments of reflection, I could have found a way to address her comments to point out how wrong they sounded without creating a whole scene, but it was time for work to start and that was when the door was opened. Plus, that’s not “Trump is better for the economy,” or “Trump will close the border,” or “Trump is for freedom and Harris is a communist,” that’s “The military is actually running things now until Trump is reelected.” I mean, that’s next level separated from reality.
I’d have had to ask questions and get more details to even understand her position enough to give a rebuttal. Probably a Socratic method approach. But then I’d have to listen to more of that nonsense.
I guess maybe a simple dismissal might have gone over. “You’re right, that doesn’t sound believable. Good luck with that.” But don’t think for a moment that would have affected how she thought. I would just be one more person who “didn’t accept the truth.”

I was actually going to make a ‘Trump supporters’ thread today because that seemed the best home for discussion of Trump’s new innovation, as of a Pennsylvania rally speech yesterday: offering the plots of movies as policy proposals.
So apparently none of Trump’s fans see anything wrong with his plan to make movies come true. And I’m wondering if there might be any limit on that at all.

Who in the Bible was known for hatching dozens of money-making scams solely to enrich himself and fleece his followers (all of which failed, because he was a moron), for lying every time he opened his mouth, and who exhibited in full measure the qualities of “mendacity, duplicity, depravity, hypocrisy and venality” (to quote a recent article)? I believe it was Jesus. 
There’s a point where you have to decide how much you really want to engage with the crazy. Most Trump supporters in my life know better than to bring the crazy around me. I know my mother stopped after I told her she was a frightened person living in a world of bullshit conspiracy theories.
Still, I’m starting to lack patience and I’m more likely to push back now than I was eight years past. These folks live in a bubble and someone has to burst it.
Of course, the President sets gas prices. He also controls interest rates and inflation. Any idiot can see that prices coming down near election time is no accident. Joe is trying to get Harris elected and what better way than to show improvement in things? He’s not so good with food prices but all the migrants are increasing production costs and leading to increasing unemployment among the blacks (who we Republicans have always loved). Trump, alone, can fix all of that.

This is how I feel, exactly. I’m sick and fucking tired of silence. I’ve rolled my eyes so hard, so many times I live in a world of headaches.
And yes, the Socratic method is helpful. I like pressing for specifics. Then, when there are none, I like to point that out.
All too often, though, it falls on deaf ears. If anyone has a better way, I’d love to hear it.

My personal favorite trend right now is blaming Biden for the currently declining gas prices. You see, it’s all a plot to get us to vote for Democrats, especially Harris. BUT, when gas prices were higher, this was also Biden’s fault because, of course, he is trying to destroy America, since he hate the country and all.
So, lower gas prices are because Biden is evil. And higher gas prices are because Biden is evil. I don’t think Biden hates America, but I’m starting to think he might have a good reason to do so.
And where are those “Thank you President Biden” stickers for the gas pumps when we need them now?
