But no, I have never heard of a cream cheese sandwich. Mayonnaise sandwich, yes. But not cream cheese.
I’d prefer the sandwich to have more than just cream cheese, sweet or savory. But if that’s not an option, sure, a cream cheese sandwich would be OK. I voted “condiment only”, but that’s because the choices were lacking.
Cream cheese on white bread (or Italian, or oatmeal…whatever I’ve got handy) is my favorite “quick, I need something to eat on the way to work” sandwich. spread cream cheese on each slice and fold them in half. Quick, portable, not messy, no waiting for anything to toast…smear and go. Sometimes, when I have more time, I add jam or preserves. In fact, I read the beginning of this thread at work and had to stop at the store on the way home to buy cream cheese so I’ll be ready for morning! When I have time, and bagels, I have it on a toasted bagel.
Then there is the cream cheese, cucumber, dill and turkey sandwich.
The Hamburger with cream cheese, mustard and onion.
The finger sandwiches made with cream cheese lightly seasoned and topped with cucumbers.
The spread made with cream cheese, black olives, toasted pecans and tuna.
Cream cheese topped with Pick-a-Peppa sauce on crackers.
Cream cheese topped with strawberry preserves, on cracker.
Slices of ham spread with cream cheese and topped with green onion, rolled up and sliced.
The aforementioned salami and cram cheese roll-ups.
I think you can guess which way I voted.
Oh, wow, I may have to try that–sounds just wonderful!
I didn’t vote because I never thought about just cream cheese on bread before and I would have to try it before I decided. It sounds good though. I remember once having sandwiches made with a cream cheese/smoked turkey spread and they were delicious.
I just LOVE cream cheese, on lots of things–bagels, vanilla wafers, graham crackers, and ginger snaps are my favorites to top.
When my husband was stationed in Spain, I bought some food from the commissary, and some food from the local merchants. Then I’d combine the foods. One of my favorite combinations was fresh baked bread and chorizo and cream cheese. And it wasn’t just me…I’d serve this combination to other Americans, and everyone loved it.
Of course, when you start out with bread that was baked that morning, it’s hard to go wrong.
I voted “either”, but the OP wrote about cream cheese spread “half-inch thick”. That’s about 2/3 the diameter of a US dime! I’ve never had that. I used to have it spread on white bread, then the bread folded in half. I’d call that a sandwich, but perhaps not everyone would. Much more often I’ve had butter on bread that way.
Ask the baker to slice the loaf of white bread lengthwise. Remove all crusts. Spread each piece of bread with filling made of cream cheese, green olive with pimento, small amount of mayo, pecans. Stack each piece atop one another, refrigerate. Ice the whole loaf with more softened cream cheese.
Refrigerate again. Slice through like torte cake. I’ve had this served at showers, luncheons: delicious.
Cucumber sandwiches:
Cream cheese mixed with small amount of mayo and dry Ranch dressing (let sit refrigerated a few hours) spread atop Pumpernickel bread. Add sliced cucumber.
Amazing concept!!!
Toast-yes. Soft bread? No. And half an inch thick is too much for any spread: even an eighth of that is pushing it,
One of my favorite sandwiches is cream cheese, ham, and alfalfa sprouts. I usually use an onion bagel or bialy, but good baguette works as well. White bread? No way, I’m picky about bread.
Peanut butter and cream cheese, on lightly toasted bread. Tastes like Grandma’s house.
Cream cheese and strawberry jam on toasted raisin bread… mmmmmmm
Sure white bread and cream cheese can work for me, but usually with a splash of tabasco on top. This is my midnight snack food- really fast, tasty and satisfying.
Cream cheese is good eaten by it’s self in quantities of about 4 ounces at a time.
Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee shops had a cream cheese with nuts sandwich I used to order when I was a teenager.
You left off an option: Cream cheese as main attraction, not as condiment.
It sounds weird to me to use cream cheese as a condiment. Cheese is never a condiment, it’s always a main part of the sandwich. I grew up with slicing a hunk of cream cheese and wrapping a piece of bread around it. Maybe add a little mustard or mayo to go with it.
When I discovered bagels in grad school, it was natural to have one with just cream cheese.
Ick.
One of my dad’s peccadiiloes was the cream cheese and olive sandwich.
He’d drop a whole block of Philly CC in a bowl, dump in an entire jar of green olives and mash the whole thing into a spreadable paste. Onto white bread or toast - he loved it. I ran away.
Right-thinking kids eat PB&J. Or maybe PB & sugar & raisins. NOT “creamcheese” for Pete’s sake!
Don’t get me started on his fried bananas and Cream Of Wheat[sup]®[/sup]
