Creamsicle kitty likes us

Okay, let me guess…
You and your spouse are now relegated to the foot of the bed? And at opposite corners.

When I turned in, Tonka had moved to the middle of the foot of the bed. He left when I came in, but Creamsicle stayed. She wasn’t there this morning, having moved to the back of the living room chair.

Oh my goodness, Tonka is a beautiful cat!! Don’t think I ever saw him before.

On the topic of names, when I was a kid, what you call a “creamsicle bar,” we used to call 50/50 bars. Not necessarily a good cat name in there though.

My wonderful orange cat is named Orange Julius al Raschid, the Just and the Wise. Because, yannow, of Orange Juliuses. And the Arabian Nights.

Cats tell you their names, and it seems to me that Creamsicle has made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that her name is, indeed, Creamsicle. You’ll just have to tell your SO that she’s stuck with it.

Instead of putting the collar around the neck, why not just slip it around her belly?

Or use a harness?

Collars are a no-go.

Sorry.

In my example above, the pet door works on the kitty’s implanted microchip, so no collar necessary.

You could be all fancy and call her Creme.

if you have a wandering animal come by, especially a cat, give it its own space. feed, water and groom it in a well separated space from your other animals. that way a space isn’t a resource fight.

establish this territory yourself as if you were a competing animal. you don’t let the other animal in another’s space.

they can figure out how to get along with each other easier.

Get each of them a large, empty cardboard box!

I got one cat to stop scratching the screen by putting two-sided sticky tape on the screen. Cats generally do not like that.

The SO bagged up Creamsicle and is on her way to the vet to have her checked out. I’m guessing she’ll get shots, at least. (The cat, not the SO.) We’ll find out if she has a chip, and if she’s been spayed. If she hasn’t been spayed, we’ll have it done; but I don’t know when.

One of the SO’s students’ sister lost a cat recently. The SO suggested she might want to take in Creamsicle. She got an email yesterday saying the sister isn’t ready for another cat yet. The SO said that’s OK; Creamsicle is growing on her. (Ha! She was growing on her since Day One!) Anyway, if she’s an indoor/outdoor cat she should be outdoors in an area she knows. There’s a little creek behind the house, and I saw a neighbour working in his back yard across it. I asked him if he knew if Creamsicle belonged to anyone. He said ‘Not me! I already have four cats!’ He said she might belong to someone on the next street over. He said she’s definitely not the dead woman’s cat. I might go knocking on doors this weekend.

They were back early from the vet. Turns out they’re too busy to see her today. The SO has an appointment for Monday.

They did scan her though (the cat, not the SO), and she isn’t chipped. Everyone thought Creamsicle was sweet. The receptionist said that if Creamsicle needed a home, she’d take her.

Vet receptionists are suckers like that.

Creamsicle kitty is curled up on the back of the chair, and Tonka is curled up on the ottoman. Snoozy kitties…

That’s what cats do. I personally like it; gives me permission to nap too. (“I caught it from the cats.”)

Vet update:

The vet says Creamsicle looks healthy. She says she’s a year old at the youngest, and may be up to two years old. And she’s pregnant. It looks like she may have been impregnated about the time she showed up here. (Note: Tonka has been neutered, and she won’t let him try any funny business anyway.)

Creamsicle got a rabies shot and a distemper shot. She’s going in Thursday for an abortion and spaying. She’ll also have an FeLV test. (Reading about it, rural cats are less likely to be infected than urban cats.) We’re pretty sure Tonka had an FeLV inoculation (as well as his other shots), as we got him from a reputable shelter where he’d been a very long time. Fingers crossed for a negative result on Creamsicle.

We need to take up the food and water before midnight tomorrow. Tonka isn’t going to suffer, fat as he is. Creamsicle doesn’t use the litter box, and wants to be let outside in the morning. Might be an issue. I’ll put out the travel litter box in the morning. The SO has to work. Since I’m telecommuting Thursday, I’ll sneak out and drop the car off at the shop, then drive the loaner home and pack up Creamsicle and take her to the vet.

Glad you had her checked sooner than later! Cats go from “she’s getting a little chubby” to “hey, she’s giving birth” pretty quickly. They tend not to obviously “show” until the last couple of weeks.

Once her hormones settle, she really may decide being an indoor kitty with a big brother isn’t so bad after all. You’ll want to keep her indoors while she heals for a couple days at least. We recommend two nights for ferals, especially with a larger spay/abort incision. If she has her own litter box, she may not complain too much. Anyway, best wishes, hope everything goes as expected!

They do abortions for kitty-cats? I had no idea!

Hope kitty is okay. Thank you from me for taking the trouble and expense to care for her.
