I’m looking for recommendations for get-under-your-skin wide-eyed creepy music that you play with the lights on.
The original Blair Witch movie may not be everyone’s favorite, but the last track on the “soundtrack” is a fantastically unsettling ambient mix
Check out Goblin. They did a lot of horror movie soundtracks like Dawn of the Dead…

Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack (but mostly unused in the film) to John Carpenter’s The Thing.
I like Philip Glass’s (Glass’ ?) soundtrack for Dracula.
Steve Moore’s “Cub” soundtrack. He is very much influenced by Goblin and John Carpenter.

The mad laughter disturbed Pluto the spaniel, and he came over to me for reassurance. 
Bernard Herrmann’s music expresses horror rather well.
