Last night I watched “Crimson Tide” for the first time since I saw it as a new release in the theater several years ago. In the final stand-off conflict, as they waited for the emergency action message to be downloaded, the captain and the XO get into a discussion about Lipinzaner (sp?) stallions. The captain makes a remark about their being white.
At the time I first saw the movie, that comment seemed to carry some racial overtones. It seemed to be one more way for the captain to take a shot at the XO. On the other hand, when I saw it last night, that comment didn’t seem so racially provocative. Does any one else have an opinion on this? Was the captain intentionally race-baiting, possibly to draw an emotional reaction out of a so-far restrained XO, or was this simply one of the facts he was trying to use to support his side in the debate?
