60 posts, and I still have no clue what the fuck I’m reading.
Game of Thrones is not history. Nor is it a documentary.
And it’s obviously not willful ignorance. It’s willful resistance to pedantry. There is a difference.
This is funny coming from the guy who posted a major Star Wars spoiler, dickishly refused to apologize, and ridiculed the people who were annoyed about it. You don’t exactly have the moral high ground here.
Man, this is weird thread. Why does it matter if he has the “moral high ground”? Is he alleging a moral violation? No.
He’s simply saying that someone who deliberately misspells the names of something are annoying. And instead of acting like normal Dopers who like to be nitpicked until they get it right as a matter of pride, you’re all attacking him.
I don’t know how many times I’ve deliberately looked up how to spell a name before posting about it. And I never continue to use the wrong spelling once I know it’s wrong. It could be some stupid TV show, or it could be history. It’s just how this board works.
Spelling is important here. I can’t believe people are making up excuses for why it doesn’t matter. On the SDMB, where I might even get someone pointing out that this sentence is actually a fragment.
If I started putting … in my sentences or refusing to capitalize or punctuate correctly, I’d get a Pit thread. But a guy intentionally misspelling the names of characters on a show someone likes is somehow perfectly fine, and it’s an affront to point that out?
Shut up, Big Tard.
Yeah, there are some posters who like to bring up certain things from the past to impugn my character when it has absolutely no relevance to the discussion at hand. My gripe here is very sensible and reasonable, and stands on its own merits regardless of how terrible a person anyone thinks I am.
I also find it pretty bewildering that the Dope would fall back on the old “as long as you know what he means, who cares?” argument. It’s certainly not the biggest deal in the world, and it’s not like I’m losing sleep over this. But I like to participate in the GoT discussions, and this is just an annoying little thing that has been going on in those discussions for years, and still continues to happen in every thread. Critical1 is a peculiar and flippant little fucker who thinks he knows better than the creators of the series how the character names “should” be spelled, and deserves to be called out on it.
Count me in as considering it annoying. But the mods did jack about “regards, Shitstain”, they did jack about the stupid quarry shit, the’ll do jack about this.
Why? Because he’s right?
No. “Shut up, Big Tard” is a fledgling meme.
Welcome to the SDMB. ![]()
It always has to be about you, doesn’t it? You get pitted because you’re an ignorant man-child who is always lecturing people from the depths of your mother’s basement, clutching your cassein-free cheese.
Regardless, those children are still dead.![]()
Strangely, I have a couple of friends who are real-life melon farmers. They met during college and fell in love and bought a farm in the county not far from town. They’re getting married this autumn, in probably the biggest wedding ceremony I’ve ever been to–the man told me there would be over 200 guests. He’s a little freaked out and a lot frazzled, but his hands are tied. Due to their profession,
They canteloupe.
You are dead to me
I forgot about that, it’s a much bigger thread shit than misspelling a character’s name.
No, that’s just a common misspelling of his name.
Actually, what writing system does Westeros use? Maybe there’s just several systems of transliteration, like how Laozi sometimes is written Lao-Tze, or Lao-Tzu.
I don’t recall any examples of Westerosi writing on screen, however, I do recall Ser Davos, during his reading lessons, stumbling over the word ‘knight’, pronouncing it ‘k-nig-ht’, which would indicate something like Latin writing. Of course, that could also easily be because we’re seeing the whole thing through the eyes of a character who understands the language, so it’s just sort of an equivalent mispronunciation…
Or he’s a Monty Python fan
Have never read or watched GoT, never read the threads discussing the shows or the books.
But to be pedantic - the poster is, from your description,* not ignorant*. Ignorance is a simple lack of knowledge. The poster, according to your description, is very aware that the spellings are incorrect, that using the incorrect spelling is annoying to at least one other thread participant, possibly more, and has no reason to believe that anyone gains any value from the continued intentional substitution.
If the op’s description is accurate then this is someone continuing to do something in order to annoy or at best knowingly continuing to do something that annoys for no discernible reason. Is that being an asshole, an agriculturalist specializing in plants of the family Cucurbitaceae, one who metaphorically engages in maternal penile vaginal penetration, or a simple jerk? Not sure but it is at least one of 'em.
That said, so?
Given that (assuming it is as you say) the only plausible reason for the poster to persist is that the poster derives some pleasure from provoking annoyance, the only rational response is to ignore it. Scroll wheel works. Skip the agriculturalist’s contributions and move along. The poster is not the only one here with similar keyboard tics.
Letting a yank jerk your chain … jerk your yank? … whatever. Is feeding … this sort of behavior. Scroll baby scroll!
Or investigate the wonders of the Ignore function.
