20 or so years ago my sister gave me the coolest thing…it was sort of a cross between a sleeping bag and a throw or comforter. It was flannel inside and simple cotten out, it zipped up to about the chest, and at the top, the back of it would fold over each shoulder and snap at the front, allowing your arms to poke through so you could read a book or eat or something, and be completely contained in this cozy warm bag.
My mother, who is turning 80 next month, has told me that she is simply always cold. She has ok bedding, but I know she would just love something like this, and I can’t find it. I can find sleeping bags and I can find comforters, but I really want whatever the hell this thing is called.
Your help will lead to a very old woman being warm.
(I found something similar for Deb at Linens 'n Things a few years ago, but I can’t find a “name” on the tag. (Bed, Bath, and Beyond might carry something like that, as well.)
I had one of those things! I think it was called a “snug sack” or something close to that. Haven’t seen one since the Great Energy Crisis of the '70s.
If you can’t find one for sale, I think they would be very easy to make. Just buy suitable material (prequilted would be good, or else fake fur), and cut a rectangle just a bit longer than the length of your mother’s body from heels to nape of neck and make the width whatever would wrap around her with a comfortable amount of looseness. Hem it on all sides. Sew in a zipper (or a strip of velcro) from the bottom hem up to waist height, and add a velcro button to the top corners (which become the center when folded around her shoulders.)
Mine also had two stitched fastenings where the folded down corners met the ‘waist’ – this created more of a sleeve effect and kept the thing from flapping so much when you move your arms.
I finally found one! At least, the picture looks right, though it isn’t the clearest. There only seems to be one manufacture, Slumberjack, and they call them “Fleece Body Wraps.” They are retailed through a lot of places, including Amazon. Here’s one of the urls:
Thank you all so much. These are all pretty good facsimiles of what I was looking for, although in a perfect world it would be the bottom of the “Personal Comforter” and the top of the “Fleece Body Wraps” and made with down. Maybe this is a product I should make!
